Whether or not the moniker ‘betsy & iya’ rings a bell in print, you’ll recognize the bold and beautiful pieces from jewelry designer Betsy Cross as ones you’ve seen dangling from the necks, wrists and ears of Portland’s best accessorized ladies — her wares know no bounds when it comes to size, color and sass. For a company started somewhat on a whim, betsy & iya’s old-meets-new aesthetic has landed in Portland and hit the ground running, being featured in many of your favorite local boutiques, as well as in retailers across the country.

Much of this success can be attributed to the down-to-earth nature of the woman behind it all. Cross is humble, and genuinely flattered when consumers gush over her unique pieces, as they are often apt to do. Her willingness to collaborate and customize gives each design a spark of personality and ensures maximum satisfaction with every purchase.

NEAT People is proud to profile the designer as the grand opening of the newly expanded betsy & iya studio and showroom in Northwest Portland draws near. Cross invites one and all (that means YOU) to her store from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Frday, Nov. 19th for a pre-holiday sale complete with drinks, discounts and a free copy of the event soundtrack, compiled specifically for the opening.

A dancer turned theater graduate student turned jewelry designer who also moonlights as a personal DJ?! Ladies and gentleman, the multi-talented Betsy Cross:

Congratulations on the new space! How did it all come together?
Thank you! I was operating for two years out of a much smaller unit in the same building. I caught wind that this space would be available in April and things just started to fall into place. We moved in that same month, but haven’t had the time to devote to a grand opening until now. The main goal of our event on Friday is to serve as a sort of “coming out,” a chance to say that we are here and open for business. I welcome the chance to meet and chat with people coming in to the shop, as it can sometimes get very reclusive when its just me working away in the studio.

How did you decide on the name ‘betsy & iya’?[ sound it out with me: ‘bet-see & eye-uh’]
The name comes from the idea of opposites coming together in a harmonious way. The unexpected combination of old and new, the beauty in the perpendicular. The ‘betsy’ part is obviously taken from me, but it also represents a name that is very traditional and old timey. Combine that with ‘iya’ which is new, exotic and foreign, and you have exactly the fusion that defines my work. I love mixing vintage with handmade and I wanted a name to reflect that. It is also an homage to my older sister, Ashlyn. I couldn’t quite pronounce her name when I was young, so I called her ‘iya.’ She has been a life-long source of comfort and motivation, always pushing me to do my best. We are also very, very different people, so again, the name is a combination of two separate worlds colliding to create a strong bond.

Tell us about your background and how you got involved in jewelry making. Did you come out of the womb with wire cutters and a sketch book?
No, thankfully for my mother’s sake! This whole venture came later in life. My original intent was to become a dancer. The dance program at my college was housed in the theater department, and I quickly shifted my focus to acting. My performance based background still helps me today and manifests itself in a sense of movement and fluidity that is hopefully conveyed in my pieces.
I moved to Portland in 2006 after finishing up my graduate degree in theater and I fell in love times two, with both Will and with the city, and saw so many opportunities for my artistry to grow.

What else inspires your designs?
I have always been inspired and intrigued by native American and African tribal cultures. Color, dance, narrative, all speak to me very strongly and breathe life into the ideas that can begin from a simple image or piece of art. As a part of my grad work, I taught in Mexico City and was extremely inspired by the Mayan culture, ruins, remains, and the idea of adornment that has been around for so long. And I do feel inspired by people, but there is not one specific designer that I aspire to emulate. Through my work, I just want to find out who I am and be different from what is already available out there.

How would you describe your design process?
Perhaps due to the fact that I do not have formal training, designing is freeing for me because I do not get hung up on a certain step-by-step protocol as being the correct or incorrect way to create. The design process is so organic and expansive. It often starts with an idea and then blossoms and grows, which cannot ever be forced, it just has to happen. I seem to get my best ideas when I have moments of calm and silence, when I do not have to be any place but where I am in that moment. Flights are very good times for this head space to occur because you cannot be anywhere but on the airplane. My Morse Code pieces (right) were inspired by the lines and circles created by crops and grain bins seen when I peered out the window on a flight. Conversely, the actual production process is more mindless and structured, so I often set manageable goals for myself in order to accomplish pieces efficiently. I’ll give myself till the end of a song to complete a certain task and that helps keep me focused.

Wow, SO much of your hard work is put into each piece, your website even describes the items as being “lovingly birthed.” Do you ever find it difficult to part with certain babies, er, pieces?
Yes, absolutely. A necklace that I recently crafted from an old apartment number (#3) just sold and that one was difficult to let go, although somewhat relieving because I am close friends with the buyer. It is those one-of-a-kind pieces that shock even me when I actually see them finished. And it is hard to let them go, especially if I haven’t taken the time to properly document the piece before it is sold. All that being said, the process is overwhelmingly positive. Just the fact that someone wants and is willing to pay for something I’ve created never ceases to amaze me. Making work that is accessible and that people feel a response to eases the separation anxiety.

Clearly, jewelry can be pretty personal stuff. What tips do you have for giving jewelry as a gift this holiday season?
It is important to be aware of who you are buying for, but I also think it is much more interesting if you put a part of yourself into what you’re purchasing. I would suggest narrowing it down to a few items that you are drawn to right away, and then edit down based on the recipient’s personal style and what you could actually see her wearing. An initial necklace is a great gift item that is both unique to the person and easy to wear. Just don’t over analyze; go with your gut and what you think is cool. If it is coming from a place of love, it is probably going to work out.

Let’s talk a bit about your own fashion sense. Describe your own style in three words or less:
A Victorian break-dancer.

Whoa dang! I think I just saw one of those on Burnside St. last night.

What can we most often find you wearing?
Boots. Neutral colored T-shirts. Cords. My personal style is comfortable with a masculine influence, especially when it comes to my shoes. I have three pairs of boots that I have in steady rotation. I got married in this pair of red cowboy boots that have been resoled countless times. I rarely wear heels. I do like to spice things up when it comes to my accessories, though. I’ll throw a belt from an estate sale around my waist to give my basic T-shirt some shape. Colored and patterned tights look great when paired with a simple dress and boots. Yes, big shock, I mention boots again!

Oh, you know we understand! Boots are in fact made for walking, and we definitely plan on strolling by your grand opening. What else should we know about the event?
It is truly meant to be a celebration of this new space and an invite for people to shop and mingle. We’re offering 10 percent off every purchase, as well as greater discounts on some discontinued items. There will be a raffle to win one of three gift certificates worth $25, $75 and $100, respectively, and the only way to enter is by showing up! Oh, and everyone gets a free CD featuring songs played at the event. And did I mention champagne yet?!

Sales, drinks, jewels…let’s all rejoice at the death of the “omg.what.am.I.gonna.do.on.Friday” question for this week at least. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat, Betsy. I believe there is a hammer calling your name, we’ll let you get back to all the opening preparations.

It’s not easy for a store to stand out on Southeast Portland’s super hip strip of Hawthorne Boulevard, but the Red Light Clothing Exchange does just that because of its dedication to buying directly from the public and keeping prices affordable for those of every age, shape and degree of quirk.

Red Light is not only the city’s largest independent clothing store, but also “Halloween Central” every October. Whether you’ve been planning your ensemble since November 1 of last year, or you’re scrambling to put something together on October 30, Red Light is Portland’s one-stop shop for all your Halloween needs.

As the days before Halloween get fewer and far between, staff at Red Light go into “Christmas Eve mode,” helping frantic last-minute shoppers craft the perfect costume before the big night. Given the busy time of year, getting the chance to chat with Red Light store manager Erica Easley is sweeter than the sugar rush felt post candy corn binge.

In between managing The Red Light, owning her own knee-sock company, Rock Socks, and keeping homes in both Portland and Los Angeles, Easley sat down to discuss why Red Light shines so brightly in October, who she’d love to trick-or-treat with, and why you are what you eat AND where you shop. Ladies and gentleman, ghosts and goblins, the Queen of ‘Ween herself, Ms. Erica Easley:

What makes The Red Light a special Halloween costume destination?
We plan for Halloween all year. Since we are constantly buying clothes, we see things that we specifically set aside for October. The Portland store opened in October of 1999, so the Halloween tradition has been with us since the beginning. It really is a group passion here, and I think it shows in the way we are able to offer people so many affordable options.

Inquiring minds must know: What is your costume this year?
I still do not know! We all spend so much time around here dedicated to helping others find their outfits that we often don’t consider our own until the day of. Last year I went as Robin Hood. Assisting people wherever they are in the costume planning process is one of the things that makes Red Light special. We can help you if you have an idea a month in advance, but we’re also open Halloween day, just in case. No need to have it all figured out, we just ask that you come in with an open mind. Be creative and flexible and you’ll find exactly what you need.

Do you have a favorite costume from your childhood?
Yes! When I was 6-years-old I went as a punk rocker. Dyed my hair hot pink, shredded my clothes, wore an amazing Boy George T-shirt that I so wish I still owned! Another year I went as a Chinese take-out box, which I think was very creative.

Any favorite scary movies?
Hands down my favorite scary movie is called “The Watcher in the Woods.” It is actually an old Disney movie, but it is very dark and gives me the chills just talking about it! Bette Davis stars as this creepy old lady with an intense voice and you just don’t know what her deal is. Why is she evil? I am definitely more drawn to the psychological thrillers than anything gory or bloody.

Who is your dream Trick-or-Treating partner?
David Lee Roth. No costume, just him as himself, as he is his own best creation. He is so entertaining wherever he is, full of zingers and one-liners, a real performer.

The past few years have seen a rise in the celebrity-parody costume (i.e. Sarah Palin, Jon & Kate Gosselin, The Many Phases of Britney). Who is this year’s most mockable public figure?
People seem to be a bit maxed out on the political stuff as well as the overtly sexy costumes, both of which I am glad to see. The New York Times predicted that BP Oil Rig workers would be big this year, but we haven’t seen any of that yet. A few Chilean Miners here and there. Always popular are the blonde bombshells, Marilyn Monroe, classic movie stars, etc.

Ok, so no Tiger and not a lot of French Maids. Darn. What are you seeing this year?
It’s funny because it hasn’t been a specific person or costume, but rather general themes: circus performers, fairy tail/fantasy creatures, still some Vampires from the Twilight craze. Lots of sequins, spandex, color. It makes it more fun for us to help when people have one piece — a wig, a pair of shoes, a hat — and are willing to go off that and build something really unique.

Apart from Halloween, who or what most influences your fashion aesthetic?
Having fun with clothes is really what shapes my personal style. Everything I wear is based on that notion, and I think colors and patterns are great ways to be creative and experimental. I’ve always been over the top when compared to most people in terms of fashion. I love to wear shorts and knee socks and again, the more color the better. I am influenced by those who embrace the playful, flamboyant side of fashion like I do. People like Cyndi Lauper, Boy George and my ultimate style kindred spirit, Riff Randall from Rock ‘N’ Roll High School (right).

Did your own personal style needs lead you to create Rock Socks?
Yes. Like I said, I love wearing brightly colored knee socks, but it was so hard to find any options other than plain, striped or argyle. It started during the 2008 Presidential Election with a pair of Obama socks and just took off from there as more and more people started asking about them. Now Rock Socks (below right) are carried in several shops locally as well as all over the country, and even in Canada and Japan.

Speaking of local shops, what other stores do you frequent in Portland?
Smut, The Monticello Antique Marketplace, a shop on Mississippi called Flutter that has such unique displays. And of course, I love shopping at Red Light!

Do you feel a sense of community among independent store owners?
I tend to keep a low-profile when associating with other business owners, but I do wish more consumers would start thinking about clothing and retail like they think about food. The big push out here is toward restaurants that source from local farms and the whole green movement that encourages consumers to buy locally. That same sense of responsibility needs to translate to the retail industry because it supports the same goal of making neighborhoods and communities unique and sustainable. There are so many opportunities in Portland to shop in beautifully curated stores and get a very personal experience that you cannot find at malls.

As the seasons shift, what is your must-have list for Fall/Winter?
I am always in the market for a great pair of boots that can withstand all the stomping around necessary during a Portland winter. I am also on the hunt for some great gloves, I have a hard time finding good ones that are warm and durable but also unique.

So, one more Halloween question before we release you back into the frenzy… It is you vs. Freddy Krueger in an epic battle over who gets the last piece of Halloween Candy from your stash: 1) What is the Candy, and 2) Who would win and why?
Oh man. The candy is definitely Junior Mints, chocolate + mint is my winning combo. And I regret to say that they would belong to Mr. Krueger. I would totally lose and be torn apart while trying to run through the woods! I am scared so easily, it would be no contest.

Easley is not only the epitome of effortless personal style, but she also gains points for her honesty! Thank you so much for your time. We’ll let you return to the store and work your magic. Until next year, Happy Halloween!

Here we go… again! Project Runway 8 premieres on Lifetime TV this Thursday, July 29 at 9 p.m., with yet another talented Portland area designer set to compete in a scissors showdown against 16 other fashionable folks from around the country. Last season, Vancouver, Wash.’s Seth Aaron Henderson brought home the Project Runway 7 win, and local designer Janeane Marie Ceccanti made Portland proud in the first few episodes, too. Now all eyes are on MothLove designer Gretchen Jones, to see if she has was it takes to dazzle on fashion’s most exciting show and make the Portland fashion community proud once more. Let’s see what she has to say…

Do you think you have what it takes to bring home another Project Runway win for Portland?
Well… expectations can lead to unrealistic standards on both ends. I certainly applied with a confidence in my ability to perform under such pressures as Project Runway imparts, however my goal was and is to maintain my perspective and point of view as a designer regardless of my final standing. I believe in my talent, in my unique perspective and the marketability of my product, as well as myself. Walking into the contest with a personal awareness as I did kept me grounded and focused on attaining my goals.

What are you most looking forward to about appearing on the show?
Exposure. I chose to apply and participate on the show because I was extremely aware that without such an effort, my business and passion could not sustain the high overhead and demanding production standards needed to maintain itself. I know I need help, I need mentorship within my approach to design and the industry. I also need financial support to start, maintain and grow my company into a healthy and profiting business that can support itself and me. To me, Project Runway was and is about gaining access/exposure to the resources and support any burgeoning fashion talent needs to be successful.

Where will you be watching this week’s premiere?
I am choosing not to watch at all. I went on the show not to be on television for myself, but for others.

Do you think it’s beneficial for Portland’s design scene to get such great national exposure?
I certainly think being one of four designers to be highlighted on Project Runway is worth noting. I believe Portland to be one of the few arteries of independent fashion in the nation. Choosing to live and grow within my design career here has enabled me the freedom to explore, make mistakes and refine my point of view and goals in an environment that is supportive and easy to access. Without the time I have spent here, I could not be who I am today and I am very grateful for this experience/time not only as a designer, but person. I think for any designer aiming to develop outside of the mainstream boundaries of the fashion industry, in a community that affords you the room to fall and get back up again, is worth noting.

How would you describe your MothLove designs for people who haven’t seen your work?
MothLove (right) is a sustainable sportswear line based on conceptual and minimalist art principles, with a nod to the bohemian and 1970’s. I create clothing meant to be worn and interpreted by its wearer. With details hindering on nuance, MothLove garments are the canvas to your every day sensibilities.

Where do you draw inspiration for your work?
I do a lot of research. Reading magazines, blogging, paying attention to fashion weeks and street style. I love exploring fine art and music and how the collective consciousness translates between all mediums.

Where can people buy your things?
Online or in store at Frances May on Southwest Washington and 11th Avenue in Portland. Online through MothLove.com.

Who are some of your favorite Portland area designers?
I’d mention one and have to mention them all. It’s a community thriving with talent and they all need our support.

What’s your take on Portland’s sense of style?
Portland is about layering, casual cool and modernity come functionality.

And what are some local shops you love to frequent the most?
Una, Stand Up Comedy, Sword + Fern, Frances May, Frank James, Odessa, Souchi, Local35…

Have you always been into fashion and design?
When I was three-years-old I refused to go outside of the house if my cable knit tights were ‘benty,’ and so grew the girl into the fashionista she was born to be.

Whose style do you most admire?
I admire those whom care not to care and explore fashion as self expression, but with an inert sense of style and class. Kate Moss, Chloe Sevigny, Alexa Chung, Diane Kruger, etc. And from the past, Lauren Hutton, Jane Birken, Diane Keaton and so on.

What can we most often find you wearing, both in real life and on the show?
Separates and Layers. I’m thin and regularly cold. I like to take on and off as I so choose. Neutral color palettes, always a sweater, drape vs. fit. I love proportion.

What’s your most prized fashion possession?
1940’s mint condition white mink coat layered in chevrons, my grandmother Gretchen’s wedding rings and custom army jacket, and my grandfathers bolo tie.

What is your must-have Portland fashion purchase right now?
I’ve been back six days!? I have no idea what is out there! Certainly a MothLove Moonseed Tank (right) at Frances May to beat the heat… I know I’ve got one on.

In the meantime, let’s talk with Tiffanee Bean and get her take on PDX style, hear how high heels can put a swing in your step, learn more about Friday’s fashion show and find out how one of Portland’s most stylish women manages to do it all.

What are you most looking forward to at this Friday’s rooftop fashion show + party?
I can’t wait to see Popina’s new collection, I’m very excited about that! I am also just looking forward to the entire evening. I think we have a great mix of boutiques and local designers involved. It’s going to be a very fun event for everyone.

Can you give us a rundown of the runway looks we’ll get to see?
Each boutique is featuring their own style for the show. We are all focusing on summer styles, so there should be a great assortment as all the boutiques involved are so unique. We also have three boutiques featuring menswear: Moulé, Parallel and Lizard Lounge, and Solestruck will have set just for their fabulous and funky shoes.

And what exactly will your own boutique, Mabel and Zora, feature in the show?
From Mabel and Zora, we’re showing lots of summer dresses, but adding in some work outfits, too. I think we are so well known for dresses that sometimes people forget we have other items in the shop, as well, so we have some cute skirt/top sets and jeans going down the runway, too. I am hoping to have one of my own designs make it into the show, but it will be a last minute addition if it gets completed in time, but I’m super excited and hoping that it makes it in.

What are some of your other favorite things in store at Mabel and Zora right now?
I’m in love with all of the Eva Franco, we have had a great response from our customers as well: The fit is great, the styles are super feminine and it’s just a little different than everything else so it’s a welcome change. I also love the Trina Turk jewelry. She just started creating accessories this year and we can’t get enough of them. There are huge cuff bracelets (right) and giant statement necklaces, as well as fun rings and elegant earrings. It’s all so beautiful and adds so much to any outfit.

How on earth do you manage to run a boutique, produce a large scale fashion show and go to school all while expecting a new baby?
I’m not sure! Things are definitely getting harder the closer I get to my due date (five weeks away!). But I am a work-a-holic and I’m extremely energized by doing things I love, so going to school and working on things for the store are easy as I’m so interested in them. I think this fashion show is a great way to kick off the summer season, and I’m thrilled to be a part of it with all the other boutiques, it’s been exciting to see it all come together and I’m proud of the role I’ve played in it.

Do you have any other local shops you love to frequent?
I love shoes, so I head to Zelda’s Shoe Bar and Solestruck all the time for fun heels. And I think I own seven swimsuits from Popina Swimwear (right), they are definitely a favorite of mine. Lately, though, it’s been the kid’s boutiques that all my time has been spent in, getting ready for our baby. I love Posh Baby, Little Urbanites, Mother Natures, and Blackwagon.

What’s your take on Portland’s style?
I think the majority of Portland is into functional style, which makes sense with Nike, Addidas and Columbia all here. And with the weather in Portland, it’s sometimes hard to just dress fun instead of functionally, but I am happy that I have found a customer base that does love to dress up as much as I do, and enjoy really well made fashionable pieces that aren’t designed to hike the hills, but put a smile on your face and a swing to your step. I used to be a jeans and T-shirt girl until I got into fashion retail and slowly evolved into more and more interesting clothing choices. I love picking out the perfect ensemble and knowing it’s just right for the day ahead of me – which sometimes is still a pair of jeans and a T-shirt, but sometimes is a perfect tweed pencil skirt with a fabulous top and jewelry, shoes and the right handbag to set it all off. And that’s just so much fun to me!

Do you have any favorite Portland designers?
As mentioned, I love Popina Swimwear. The styles are so flattering, with a retro vibe that I’m all about. I also love Idom Designs (right). Modi Soondaratok makes beautiful, feminine pieces that are just gorgeous. Portland has so many really wonderful designers, we are very lucky to have so much talent in our city.

How would you describe your own style?
I love retro style. Our store was designed after Doris Day movies, my house is all mid-century, and I tend to dress with a little nod to the same era. I love Pucci prints and mod dresses. I love the glamour and sexiness of that era.

What is one thing we can always find you wearing?
It was always a pair of heels until just recently. Lately, I’m in a lot of empire waisted maxi dresses, as they work for my big belly without being maternity dresses.

Do you have any current fashion obsessions?
I love that Holiday has a mod vibe to it this year. It fits in with my style so well, lots of shift dresses in ponte and miniskirts with fun tights. Being pregnant, I’m obsessed with comfort right now, which is a whole new thing for me. So lots of those maxi dresses for me right now, comfortable and easy.

Do you have any fun summer-in-Portland plans once life slows back down a bit after the show?
Don’t think it will slow down for us. I’m due on August 12 and expect things to get much more hectic at that point. I am trying to balance working on my own collection with the baby and running the store, I hope to have a Spring collection in the store. But we will have a couple of pieces filtering in before that. We have two that should be in the store next month. So I will be working on it all fall and just falling in love with my new little girl.

Thanks for all your hard work on the fashion show and launch party, Tiffanee! We’ll see you Friday!

By Karen Vitt, NEAT editor in chief

Last week, we introduced you to the new Sahlia Michelle Jewelry Design website, and offered a look at the local line of gorgeous, handmade jewelry. This week, we’d like to introduce you to the equally gorgeous jewelry designer herself. Sahlia Michelle Spaan sat down with us to dish about her designs and her Portland fashion faves, and she’s even offered up a NEAT Giveaway for our readers, too!

Enter to win a Sahlia Michelle Designs “Obsidian Toggle” necklace (below, right), which features a hand-pounded sterling silver toggle clasp (meant to be worn in front) hanging from a 17″ gunmetal chain. To enter, just send an e-mail with the subject title “GUNMETAL” to neatsheet(at)karenvitt.com or leave a comment on this post. We’ll pick a lucky random winner on Sunday, July 25. In the meantime, let’s get to know Sahlia Michelle, one of Portland’s most stylish Neat PEOPLE:

How would you describe your jewelry for those who haven’t seen it?
It’s unique, hand-made and as edgy as it is timeless. I don’t like labeling my jewelry, but if I had to define my look I would use words like edgy, unique, one-of-a-kind, hand-made. Every gem and stone used is carefully chosen by me to fit a specific concept or idea. I put such time and effort into every piece that it no longer becomes jewelry but art. You could say art for your body, I guess.

Have you always loved jewelry?
I’ve always liked it, but it wasn’t until college that I really started to appreciate and collect it. I started making my own soon after.

What was the first piece of jewelry you ever designed?
The first piece I ever designed was a simple necklace that used a huge opal stone my grandmother gave me. I had the stone for a long time before I started making jewelry (in college), and I realized I could finally put it to use. I had such a great response to the one piece I knew it was something I wanted to pursue from there.

What kinds of things inspire your designs?
Traveling, shapes and textures from nature, new materials, collaborations, architecture.

What’s the strangest material you’ve ever used in a piece of jewelry?
I integrate lots of unusual materials with the sterling silver, but the strangest would probably be the naturally shed antler slices. (Antler Slice Hoop Earrings, $84, right.)

Do you have any other favorite jewelry designers in town?
Andy Lifschutz, Stone & Honey and AK Vintage, to name a few.

And what about fashion designers – do you have any favorite local clothing designers?
Lately I’ve been obsessed with Janeane Marie’s new stuff. She’s an amazing artist through and through, and I love how wearable. And I also love Emily Katz, Issac Hers and Bridge & Burn.

What’s your take on Portland’s style?
Love it. There’s so much going on and so many different styles. Portlanders overall are great at mixing elements of local, sustainable fashion with high-end pieces that everyone craves and have it look amazing! I have noticed that the seasons define the look. When the weather turns nice in Portland, so does the fashion. It’s so great to see all the risks people take when it comes to putting together outfits when the suns comes out.

What are some of your favorite places to shop in Portland?
Mostly local hole-in-the-wall boutiques. Other faves are Lizard Lounge (right), Radish Underground, Halo Shoes, Local 35. As the studio and business progress I have noticed the less known the store the better. If I want to buy clothes, the last place I think about is the mall. I really like knowing the clothes I buy are a lot like the jewelry I design: unique. I can’t understand how so many people flock to the same places to buy the same things. There are so many talented people doing things in Portland. I encourage and challenge anyone to stay out of the mall for a year, see how you can find a look that really defines you, not just what your friends are wearing. Part of what makes Portland great, take advantage.

So many! My top things I’m on the hunt for are a great pair of nude or grey strappy wedges, the perfect breezy (but tailored) spring jacket and a go-to summer dress. Oh yeah, a couple new pairs of flip flops. GO SUMMER.

GO SAHLIA! Look for Sahlia Michelle Designs in local shops, including Lizard Lounge, Radish Underground, Switch, Redux, Chapter 4, Suite 6, Phlox, Oxalis and Ellington.

Sharp, who grew up in Seattle and recently settled in Portland after stints in L.A. and New York, opened Magic Hour boutique on East Burnside in March. She’s been dazzling the local design scene ever since with her dramatic floor-length gowns, sheer floral dresses and sexy, vintage-look bikinis. In advance of her latest catwalk, we grabbed this local style-setter to ask about the upcoming fashion show, what kinds of things you’ll find in her shop, and to get her take on Portland style.

What are you most looking forward to about the Breath of Portland Fashion show on Saturday?
I’ve personally never done a fashion show where I get to show with such established designers. Kate Spade has such beautiful shoes and bags, and Janeane Marie is such an artisan with what she does. It’s really concise.

Can you tell us about your store, Magic Hour?
We have things you really won’t find anywhere else in Portland. On one end of the spectrum, it’s bright and vibrant and whimsical and Japanesey – silk jersey pieces in crazy colors, like neon yellow and fuschia, physchedelic print silk jumpers and floral print gowns. Then we have some muted styles that Portland women love. Lots of greys and silks, and things that are really easy to wear.

Who are some of the designers featured in your shop?
I have the Happy Birthday line by Honey Owens. We also carry more understated structural lines like Scout and Endovanera, to more feminine and whimsical lines like Miss KK and my own Dawn Sharp line. I also offer custom orders online. Oh, and we have a lot of jewelry from L.A. because I befriended so many designers there.

Do you have any other favorite Portland designers?
Adam Arnold is an artist at what he does. Britt Howard. Honey Owens. Joanne Burke, who makes art-to-wear with elaborate embroidery and collars. And I loved Liza Rietz’s stuff in The Mercury Fashion Show last month (right).

What’s your take on Portland’s style?
I love the way people dress up here. I don’t know, but girls are in heels and it’s got a glam, punky vibe. I have a handful of friends here who are the most fashion-forward and experimental people I’ve met.

Have you always been interested in fashion and design?
I started hand-sewing at age 10 – my mom taught me. I started by taking stuff in instead of donating it to Goodwill. I started experimenting with clothing design and used it to supplement my income.

What can we most often find you wearing?
I really like shorts – short shorts, short skirts and short dresses. It doesn’t have to be skimpy if you wear tights and leggings. And my stuff is vintage inspired. Based on ’60s style hot shorts with a high waist. I mix vintage with new things every day.

And what kinds of things inspire your own designs?
Weird things, like reading romantic novels and thinking about what the character is wearing. Japanese poster art from the 1960s. Erté. Mucha paintings (right).

Do you have any current fashion obsessions?
I’m really into the lace tights everyone’s wearing right now. I’m into mesh and see-through, and sheer portions on dresses or different pieces. I’m also really into florals. Billowy sleeves, feminine and peasanty. Clown collars. And short things that show off lots of leg.

What are some of your favorite places to shop in Portland?
I shop Rad Summer all the time – it’s right next door, and they have such odd vintage pieces. I shop at Lille boutique. House of Vintage, which is cheap and really random. I love Stand Up Comedy and Frank James. I probably shop at Una the most – they have such beautiful pieces.

So you do, Dawn Sharp! We can’t wait to see all your neat new stuff in Saturday’s show!

Breath of Portland Fashion Show

By Karen Vitt, NEAT editor in chief

It’s our job here at The Neat Sheet to pounce on fashionable Portlanders and dig into their style secrets, but today we’re taking a Neat PEOPLE day trip to Bend, Ore., home of 21-year-old college student-slash-chanteuse Sara Jackson-Holman. Tonight, Jackson-Holman will celebrate the launch of her first full-length CD, “When You Dream,” with a show at The Woods in Portland, so we caught up with the young singer/songwriter and style icon in the making to ask about her musical inspirations, her style on stage and off, and her favorite Oregon haunts.

So how would you describe your music to new listeners?
Classical meets jazz meets pop meets whimsical.

Your music is drawing comparisons to some amazing female vocalists, including Norah Jones, Feist and Adele. Have these women artists inspired your work?
I can’t say that I’ve listened to any of them extensively. I generally prefer listening to male vocalists. I think more than anything my voice is just naturally a bit jazzy and smoky.

Why is your record titled “When You Dream?”
I love dreams, and in general I am fascinated by the inner workings of the mind. Also, “When You Dream” is my favorite song on the album.

Oooooh, tell us about your own dreams!
I have vivid dreams that play like movies basically every time I sleep. I need to get better at recording them when I wake up.

We heard you were discovered by Expunged Records president Anthony McNamer after attending a show by one of our own favorite Portland bands, Blind Pilot. Do you have any other favorite local musicians or bands?
Horse Feathers and The Decemberists.

We love your baby photo! Has music always been an important part of your life?
Always. It’s been, in fact, extremely formative.

How did your first stint in the recording studio go?
My first time in the studio, I was sick. I was sick a lot at the time because I worked all summer with 2- and 3-year-olds at a crisis nursery. My voice was probably an entire octave lower, but it could not dampen my enthusiasm at finding myself in the recording studio for the first time.

Is fashion also important to you? Do you have any style icons?
Not particularly. I love fashion, though.

Do you dress in a way that matches your music?
I think style is an important component for performances. I’m just starting with performing for my album, and the style I’m going with is kind of vintage, to emphasize the older-sounding elements to my music, but still modern.

And what kinds of things do you wear off stage in your day-to-day life as a college student?
My uniform – jeans, a white V-neck shirt and Converse.

Do you have any favorite local shops or boutiques?
As a poor college student, I’m at the sales rack… whatever store I’m at.

You grew up in Bend, Ore. What are some of your favorite shops, restaurants or things to do there?
As far as activities, I love going to Smith Rock, floating the river, and just being outside in general. I love Jackson’s Corner for food (right), Di Lusso Café, Strictly Organic Coffee and Townshend’s Teahouse.

Townsend’s has a Portland location, too. Do you have any favorite things to do when you’re in Portland?
I haven’t wandered around Portland a whole lot – I’ve been up here a lot in my life, but it’s usually been to visit family and family friends. I do know I love Powell’s Books. It’s amazing. I could spend weeks there.

Your CD release party is tonight – do you know what you’re wearing yet?!
No, but I’ve been shopping during my stay in Portland. So many places to shop. So I have a few options…

So many neat places to shop in Portland, for sure. Let us know if you need recommendations. Thanks, Sara! We’ll see you at the show tonight!

A Princess a Day in May: Victoria Dinu of Grant High School

Portland Rose Festival 2010 opens today! To celebrate, we’ve spent the past two weeks bringing you A Princess a Day in May, a fun Q&A series with each of the 2010 Portland Rose Festival Princesses. We’ve given you a glimpse into the lives and styles of these 15 talented young women from every corner of The Rose City, and we’ve learned that being a Princess is not just about about prancing and parading, but is an honor awarded to select young women with gumption, smarts, ambitious goals and the ability to represent the best of their local communities.

Today, we conclude our series and encourage y’all to get out there and smell the roses. But first, allow us to introduce our final Princess a Day in May, Victoria Dinu of Grant High School:

Future education and career plans?
University of Oregon; career interests include public relations, wedding planning, violin teaching or advertising/graphic design.

What is your favorite place or thing to do in all of Portland?
Taking pictures of Portland’s skyline at dusk.

What is the coolest thing about being a Rose Festival Princess?
Because I am a Rose Festival Princess, I am a permanent part of Portland’s history.

Do you have any fun summer vacation plans after the Festival?
My summer will consist of preparing for college.

How would you describe your personal style?
Jackie Kennedy, the First Lady.

What one thing can we always find you wearing?
A scarf around my neck, and heels on my feet.

Are there any fashion items you really want right now?
I would love a new black blazer.

Who do you admire most?
My mother. She left her home in Romania with her husband with nothing but a baby and one suitcase in her hands and a few dollars in her pocket. Ten years later I was born. When I turned 16 we both realized that it was healthier for me to me to move out because it was best for me. She sacrificed her motherly instinct in order to allow me to prosper in a better situation. She still takes care of me and gives me courage to achieve absolutely anything I want.

What is your favorite book, movie or music you love most?
My favorite movie would be “The Sound of Music,” and I love all Rachmaninoff piano concerts.

What are some of your favorite places to eat and shop in Portland?
Generally, I love 23rd Avenue on the West Side. Also, I love Nordstrom. I enjoy Pambiche, a Cuban restaurant on Northeast Glisan.

What is the last accomplishment you are really proud of?
Besides becoming a Rose Festival Princess, I am also proud of being one of Wieden+Kennedy’s interns.

What have you discovered about yourself during high school?
I have been lucky enough to be introduced to so many people, ideas and activities. I once heard that “creativity can solve anything,” and I have never found such a perfect quote that paralleled my beliefs. I feel that because of my very diverse childhood and upbringing that I have learned to be very creative and for the rest of my life, use that creativity to create sustainable change around me.

For native Portland gals, growing up with the Portland Rose Festival means fantasizing about becoming a real, live Princess from the time you are 3 years old. You attend the Grand Floral Parade each year, imagining the day you’ll grow into a beautiful young woman set to drift through the city in a filmy pink gown on a rose covered float, waving to all your adoring fans as a cascade of floral scented confetti gets tangled in your tiara.

Of course, our view of what it means to earn the title of Portland Rose Festival Princess changes as we become adults. We now realize it’s not about prancing princesses, but an honor awarded to select young women with gumption, smarts, ambitious goals and the ability to represent the best of 15 local communities throughout Portland.

We here at The Neat Sheet are proponents of local women doing extraordinary things (ok, and also fashion and shopping), so we’d like to take this opportunity to introduce you to the 2010 Portland Rose Festival Court one Princess at a time, and give you a glimpse into the lives and styles of these talented young women from every corner of The Rose City. Allow us to introduce you to A Princess a Day in May, today featuring Zanele Mutepfa of Lincoln High School:

Attend a four-year university and aspire to be a founder of a therapeutic institute for women’s empowerment.

What is your favorite place or thing to do in all of Portland?

What is the coolest thing about being a Rose Festival Princess?
Everyone is always interested about what you do on your extra time, and you meet people you don’t know but they recognize you.

Who do you admire most?
My father, Paul Thomas, is a man I most admire and give my most high respect to as a human being on this earth. He is a man that adopted six children and has three of his own blood, but treats all of them the same. He is a local pediatrician who works 12-hour days and still comes home ready to do all he can for his children.

Everyone owns either a pair of skinny jeans or Uggs.

How would you describe your personal style?
With my outfits, I wear at least six pairs of heels every day before I decide on the perfect one. I wear classy clothes, but fun.

What one thing can we always find you wearing?
Jewelry.

Are there any fashion items you really want right now?
I never have enough shoes!

What is your favorite book, movie or music you love most?
I love the The Cheesecake Factory, and I love to shop at all the malls in Portland.

I plan to work, visit family in Canada, travel to the Virgin Islands and prepare for college.

What have you discovered about yourself during high school?
That I can make a difference in my world by simply sharing my experiences and perspectives and by not underestimating my influence. In the spring of 2009, I was a part of “The Future is Now” event with REAP Inc. and was able to speak about my life experiences. After this event, I realized that I do have leadership qualities.

Allow us to introduce you to A Princess a Day in May, today featuring Emily Taylor of Cleveland High School:

Future education and career plans?
I hope to attend University of Oregon to pursue a career in child development and special education, as well photography.

What is the coolest thing about being a Rose Festival Princess?
Having the honor of keeping the tradition going, and getting to represent my school. I am also looking forward to being in the parades.

Who do you admire most?
I most admire Elizabeth DuBois, the head Special Ed teacher at Cleveland. She is a very strong woman and her dedication to the program and Cleveland itself is outstanding. She taught my sister a lot when she was in her class. The creative ways she teaches these amazing kids makes me want to be a teacher. I admire her teaching, commitment and talent. I look up to Ms. DuBois and hope to become a teacher like her.

What are some of the most popular trends at Cleveland High?
Cleveland is a big biking school, but along with that some fashion trends are high waisted skirts, sandals, Nike’s and flannels.

How would you describe your personal style?
Casual and classic. I love to be comfortable, but I also want to stand out a little bit in a crowd with my own style.

What one thing can we always find you wearing?
A smile. Also, I always wear rings.

Are there any fashion items you really want right now?
Bright and colorful spring and summer clothes, such as shorts, tank tops, sandals and skirts.

What is your favorite place or thing to do in all of Portland?
My favorite thing to do is take pictures all over Portland, especially downtown.

What are some of your favorite places to shop and eat in Portland?
Hawthorne and downtown are some places I love to shop. I like eating at McMenamins all over Portland.

What is your favorite book, movie or music you love most?
I listen to all kinds of music, and one of my favorite movie’s is PIXAR’s “UP”.

What have you discovered about yourself during high school?
The most important thing I discovered is my passion and commitment to special education, and how much I want to help anyone and everyone I can. My older sister has Down syndrome, and I have grown up with her – my best friend – my whole life. But I discovered my passion for helping others in high school, and that has been the greatest feeling of all.

Do you have any fun summer vacation plans after the Festival?
Every summer for one week, my family goes to the beach. I also hope to travel around Europe.

What is the last accomplishment you were very proud of?
Aside from being crowned a Rose Festival Princess, I would have to say getting into my first choice college.

Congrats, Emily!
