So yeah, we’re all pining over the $34.95 H&M trench coat that’s taken over every other commercial on TV. In case that coveted coat is sold out before the highly anticipated H&M grand opening in Portland on Thursday, Nov. 11, we must have a back up plan. Besides, we’re still devoted to shopping local, too, and with Portland’s ever-changing daily weather a girl needs multiple options for staying warm while looking cool.

Sonja Hanchar of Pin-Me Apparel boutique on North Mississippi Avenue advocates for these very needs. “We have two types of customers: One who pops in and out of the car and is more concerned about looks than utility, and the other may be a biker who spends a lot of time in the rain.” Hanchar says both types want a look that’s “stylish, but functional, and substantial enough for rain needs.” Thankfully, the Fall 2010 outerwear trends offer something for every one of us needy Portlanders.

The military look is on the verge of over-exposure, but army green has become the new black because it goes with everything. At the very least purchase an inexpensive, lightweight style that will take you well into spring, and we’ll re-evaluate its “utility” in our wardrobe then.

Shearling, fur and leather are also having a major moment. These are worth the splurge because most cuts are timeless and a quality investment that will warm you through many winters to come. Be it faux or for real, when you make like an urban warrior you’ll never go cold or unnoticed.

There’s no question that ponchos are the most versatile silhouette of the season. Whether it’s a streamlined solid or an eccentric bright, designers have offered enough variety for everyone to find their perfect cape — like the Nau cape we found at Lizard Lounge, or the Pendleton Sonara Jacquard poncho (below right).

It almost goes without saying, but if you don’t have a quality wool peacoat by now then it’s time to play dress up. Everyone should have a polished wool coat worthy of a professional event or special occasion. Be it double breasted or belted, these are style necessities that extend far beyond any trend. This season, it’s camel coats that politely shout conservative glamour… and we hear that!

If you checked The Neat Sheet’s coverage of Portland Fashion Week, then you already know that we love us some ethnic prints and boho fun. Turn the streets of Portland into your runway by going full on nomad with un-carefully layered indigenous and Nordic prints.

In eco-friendly Portland, performance outerwear prices aren’t soaring, but design technology and street style wearablity are. Not only are local labels going green and offering reasonable prices, but they’re also finding ways to keep us warm in puffy down without any added bulk. So yes, it’s possible to look warm and slim. That’s a recipe for fashion and function worthy of Portland standards.

Sip on a complimentary coffee and slip into the sustainable, locally designed Nau down stole — a.k.a. the coolest puffy thing we’ve ever seen ($230). If you’re wanting a sleek jacket then go for a Provider ‘Ramona’ leather jacket ($585) and pair it with any of their adorable Horny Toad Plaid button-up tops ($65). C’mon this is Portland after all: A little flannel grunge is so necessary!

Mercantile
This local boutique department store is always the go-to for high end fashion. The epitome of Fall 2010 runway chic is the Rag & Bone shearling bomber jacket ($1,875). Treat yourself to a covetable camel wrap coat by Smythe ($835), which we fawned over in The Neat Sheet’s Fall 2010 Portland Fashion trend story, or be forever stylish in a classic khaki Gryphon trench ($598).

Pendleton
We’re lucky to have the retail shop of Oregon’s own historic textile and apparel manufacturer located in the heart of downtown. The quality and endurance of each garment is superb and its signature Native American prints remain in vogue as ever. They’ve gone to great lengths to keep a cult following. No, really. US Outdoor Store
This sporty downtown superstore lives up to its name with its jam-packed selection of every outerwear gear a snow bunny could need. The olive green version, part of its Green Mountain Project collection, is environmentally friendly and totally appropriate for wearing off the slopes as well. Chances are if you’re a Portland gal you own more than your fair share of cold weather boots. But living in the Northwest, where cool temps and rain rule, there’s always a good reason for yet another booty call. Meet your new BFF: The clog boot. It’s a hybrid of sorts that merges a sturdy wooden sole with a leather/suede upper boot, resulting in a stylish mix of comfort and practicality Portland women crave.

“Clog booties bring modern and Old World womanly style together,” said Jennifer Thomas, owner of the multifaceted Jet boutique on Mississippi Avenue (where currently you can find the artful Coclico clog ankle booties shown right for about $415).

Traditional Dutch clogs were made to withstand rural conditions, and with modern upgrades they’ve become the perfect fit for a Portlander on the move who wants to ditch her agonizing heels in favor of a more comfortable platform. Thomas also credits the clog style for clean lines and practical durability in winning her seal of approval.

As clog boots slowly clomp to the states from overseas, Portland boutiques are set to spoil us for Fall 2010. A variety of cool clog booties are in stores already, with plenty more on order for the coming month. Don’t expect Ikea prices on these imports, as clog boots are built to last. That makes them not just a trend, but a staple worth investing in.

Do you ever look forward to pulling out your “fat pants?” Didn’t think so. Thankfully the time has come to ditch these depressing duds in favor of the recent reinvention of loose fitting pants. Let us not revert to the days of the running man, because, yes, we are indeed too legit to quit hammer pants. Time to let go of the stigma and embrace the comfort of the harem, carrot, stretch, eased or slouchy style pants. Our new go-to bottoms are offered in a variety of interesting silhouettes and roomy alternatives to your stale staples.

“I wear them to pick up my kids from school, and the other moms in their track suits kind of stare,” said Tez Hartney, the minimalist-chic owner of Portland’s Parallel Boutique. We were equally mesmerized by Hartney and the countless looks – both casual and dressy – that she quickly put together using the Paul & Joe Sister silk “Sultan” pant. Be it a cropped sweater or tunic length T-shirt, this pant allows the freedom to play with proportions and versatility.

To step it up a notch, swap out your typical trousers and sashay in a pair of dark, silky pants with a luxurious feel. Scrunch them up mid-calf to reveal your best statement-making high heels and top it off with a simple, plain top and bold necklace. You’ll be the talk of First and Last Friday, and don’t count out pants for a wedding or special occasion either.

It may seem counter-intuitive to do a trend piece on sunglasses in the middle of summer after most people have probably shopped them back in May. However, if you’re anything like us, you have probably lost and/or broken that sweet pair of Ray Ban aviators you thought were so cool all those months ago. Well, now is your (second) chance to get ahead on the trendiest of trends in the sun-covering eyewear racket. We can see the future… and it’s looking like we could use a new pair of shades.

Sunglasses have always had the power to transform. Take it from Jack Nicholson who once said, “With my sunglasses on, I’m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I’m fat and 60.” Truer words have never been spoken, and thus we began our quest for our own pair of Jack-worthy shades that will make us look cooler, thinner, sexier, and yes, more mysterious.

Dr. Summy To, owner and optometrist at the newly opened Myoptic Optometry on North Williams Street, had a few wise words for Portland’s serious sunglass shoppers. Being a doctor, she started off with some technical advice. “Always make sure you have 100 percent UVA and UVB protection in your sunglasses.” Check. Don’t get cheapo frames from drugstore stands. She also mentions that, “polarization makes a world of difference in cutting down glare, and we highly recommend it to all of our clients.”

But what about style? “Big is still in, though not the kind that just takes over your whole face like they did a couple seasons ago,” says To. “Portland definitely embraces the step back into the ’60s and ’70s, but with a new millennium flare.” She recommends classic styles, such as the aviator tear-drop, with bold hits of color. “Thick black Wayfarer types are still Nuevo-retro, but I love the more unique, angular shapes with highlight color – a dash of orange or turquoise behind the basic black and brown giving it that bright accent without the clash.”

We’ve cut down the glare and found the best places to shop for face-flattering frames in Portland. And the winners are…

Shwood – Fever (or is it fervor?) for this locally-made all natural wooden sunglasses have been hitting the hipster nation hard all around. Swimsuit shopping is the bane of existence for most people out there (not just the ladies mind you, we know many a guy whose pasty, un-toned skin shudders at the thought). It’s almost enough to make us dread the summer months, if we weren’t so desperate for them after all the clouds and rain. This year, however, things are a little more forgiving. Retro styled, demure one-pieces and two-pieces with high-waisted bikini bottoms have been a staple of Portland’s (not so polite) style society for a while now, but this summer the trend has swum from sea to shining sea – in addition to floating down a river or two with a can of PBR.

Pamela Levenson, owner and designer of the cult Northeast Portland swim shop Popina Swimwear, has been stitching up figure flattering suits inspired by the classic shapes of the 1940’s and ’50s for years now. “The one-piece is the ultimate classy look that still leaves room for a little mystery,” she said.

Levenson will reveal her latest retro-inspired swimwear collection on the rooftop runway of the “Up in the Air” Summer Affair Fashion Show + The Neat Sheet launch party on Friday, July 9, by the way. While few would describe Portlanders as shy, apparently when it comes to swimwear, our preferences are surprisingly traditional. “I had a very interesting experience in my shop a couple years ago,” said Levenson. “A customer just got back from Southern California where she bought a string bikini. She wore it to Grant Pool and felt really out of place. Portland swimwear styles tend to be a little more conservative than, say, Southern California.”

Not that we’re all uptight, Levenson assures us. “Portland has a fun, throwback, come-as-you-are aesthetic.” The biggest perk of choosing a classic, modest style means you can have fun with bright, bold colors. Levenson’s picks for this summer are suits in canary yellow (a color that flatters pretty much all skin tones) and grape.

The sun is beginning to peak out, so we surfed the racks to find the best swimming suits in Portland for some stylish, retro inspired fun in the sun.

The Havana two-piece suit ($130) will make you feel like you’re starring in a Slim Aarons photograph in Palm Beach, even if you’re just playing beer pong in a friend’s back yard. Christa Taylor – The Vancouver, Wash.-based designer has created two flattering swimsuit styles that offer plenty of coverage without sacrificing the cute. Match the baby blue nylon-Lycra swim top with easy, pull on retro shorts in brown or black; or pair a brown, retro rouched suit top over the retro rouched swim skirt for an oh-so-very-ladylike beachwear combo. Spring 2010 runway collections by fashion powerhouses Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana took the humble art of crochet and elevated it to new levels of chic, as both designers simultaneously spun out high-fashion, craft-based looks. In Portland (a.k.a. craft capitol U.S.A.), this was hardly anything new. We’ve always been ahead of the game when it comes to the crafty side of things, particularly homemade fashion, which makes this week’s neat summer trend right up our craft-circle-lovin’ alley. Grab your hook and needle ‘cause crochet is cool once again (although, for people who love arts and crafts as much as Portlanders do, it was really never anything but).

“Crochet is rooted in the past, when women would create beautiful things for their homes and their loved ones,” said Dawn Bush, who co-owns Narcisse with Heidi Goldsmith. This downtown gem of a boutique carries the highly covetable European line Noa Noa, whose latest collection just happens to be chock-full of cute, crocheted pieces (right). ”I think people are attracted to the contrast this creates with the ultra modern designs that have been floating around for the past few years,” said Bush. “Pieces with a little bit of crochet detail add a bit of dignity and femininity to an otherwise common piece.”

If you’re getting bad flashbacks of heavy 1970’s crocheted fashion, you need to go back even further to get the right idea. Bush says the current crochet craze is more about fine and elegant details rather than an overabundance of pattern and frills, which offers some relief from the heavy, cloggy feeling often associated with crochet. “Noa Noa’s current collection relies heavily upon influences from 1940’s Paris,” she said. “It is a romantic collection with stripes, dots, small floral prints, and ruffles mixed with cotton shirts with cuffs and gentlemanly details. With a little creative cross-mixing, you’ll be feeling much more Biba girl than granny.”

Constructed completely by hand using recycled materials, Knot Ugly’s adorable line of crocheted toppers are cute and unexpected when worn in the summer. It’s like a jungle sometimes, it makes ya wonder… why not dress the part? This summer Portland fashion is going back to its roots, ditching the urban landscape for the hot, African safari. Unleash your inner animal and look hot (or cool, depending) with this season’s latest haul of wild prints fit for an Amazon-by-way-of-the-Willamette queen.

As is common when what’s old is new, animal prints this time around tend to meow more than roar. “Animal prints were huge in the 90’s, then it got overdone and for a while was definitely a fashion no-no,” said Amy Deisenroth, manager of Meringue boutique in Lake Oswego. “Now they are back, but with a more sophisticated feel. It’s kinda like ‘learn from the past’ – don’t repeat the mistakes from the 90’s but bring back what people loved about prints with an updated, modern feel.”

We tracked down Stand Up Comedy purveyor (and stylish minx) Diana Kim after spotting a pair of python oxfords in her East Burnside shop, and we asked how to pull off this trend without looking like a beast. “Avoid exposed boobs – not even a little –stretch fabrics, and multi-colors,” warned Kim. “Any modicum of restraint, even a slight one, should serve you well.” Deisenroth echoed Kim’s statement, advising us non-Katy Perry types to stick with animal prints in neutrals such as grey, black, tan, white or navy.

So why does this trend hold particular appeal for Portland-area fashion pride? “Animal skins are associated with a vague sort of rebellion, a toughness, that perhaps appeals to the anti-fashion nature of many Portlanders,” Kim said.

Speaking of anti-fashion, Deisenroth gave us some final words of wisdom in reference to this new breed of animal style. “Fashion should be a fun way to express part of who you are, so if you are wild and crazy – then just go for it! Really, it comes down to the woman wearing the print. If she’s not trashy, then what she’s wearing isn’t trashy either.”

No matter what your power animal is (personally, we’re partial to zonkeys), this season is all about untamed fashion. Did you hear that? It’s the call of the wild. Are you (wo)man enough to answer?

Parallel – Not to gloat or anything, but we have found your absolute best summer dress. Spring fashion in The Rose City comes with a few thorns. We’re grateful for the citywide parade of sweet-smelling blooms and floral-filled fantasies of Portland Rose Festival (which is under way now), but we could do without the prick of this never-ending dreary June weather. This spring, however, Portland fashion is catching up to its rosy reputation. Despite less than desirable weather, the fashion forecast is bright, and no matter where you look local fashion is coming up roses.

From indie Portland clothing and jewelry designers to local boutiques and department stores shipping in national names, retailers across the board are offering up gardens of rose printed clothing, rose blooms trimming shoes and handbags, rosebud jewelry and rosy scented beauty products, giving our Rose City moniker more petal power than ever for Spring/Summer 2010.

Jenny Greenup, designer of the local line She-She Pdx and previous co-owner of Garment boutique on Hawthorne, has embraced Portland’s trademark rose and included the motif in her latest design, alongside the famous “Made in Oregon” logo. “It is a tribute to my love of Portland,” Greenup said, referencing her Oregon Rose tank top design (right, $25 at Union Rose boutique). “I love to incorporate Portland-ish things into my designs, and the rose was just begging to be on a shirt. When the roses finally bloom in the city, it just feels like Portland.”

And while Portland may lay claim to The City of Roses title, we can’t claim this trend is of purely local origins. Rose rage is slowly but surely hitting the entire nation. “I have seen more roses popping up in fashion lately,” Greenup confirms. “They add a nice girly touch that can spice up your outfit.”

We’re especially excited to see so many different variations on the rose theme, too. They’re turning up in unexpected colors, like the charming Victorian Blue Day Rose Garden earrings by local designer Irina Schaffer of Peapod Treasures ($16, top); in a delicate riot of English garden floral prints, like these retro ’40s floral rose shorts ($42) from the Le Train Bleu Portland Pop-Up Shop; and in slightly punky, tattoo-inspired rose motifs, like Amelia Blakeman’s screenprinted Hopeful Monsters City of Roses tank top ($15, right).

As rose adorned fashion continues to bloom through summer, we’ll assume it’s a subtle nod to the awesomeness of our pretty city. For locals who want to show some Portland pride, here are a few favorite local shops and designers catering to floral-craving fashionistas.

Christa-Taylor – The Rosy June Wrap Dress ($156) by local online retailer Christa-Taylor has been so popular in Portland shops this spring the designer is currently working on a reissue. We love this super-flattering dress for its retro feel, its bright, rosy floral pattern and a high neckline that’s easy to wear. Love it or hate it (or love to hate it), “Sex and the City” has permeated popular culture and fashion for more than a decade, inspiring women to live large and dress large, whether they live in the Big Apple or the Rose City. And here in Portland, far from the bright lights and $1,000 shoe prices of the big city, local women still are anticipating another dose of fashion fabulousness with tomorrow’s release of “Sex and the City 2.”

“Portland is about as laid-back as a big city can get, yet we still have a strong appreciation for fashion and style,” said Amy Deisenroth, a loyal fan of the show and sales manager of trendsetting Meringue Boutique. “Portland women love ‘Sex and the City’ because of the characters. No matter how different our lives may be from the ladies on the show, their stories are so relatable. We have all experienced those same hopes, dreams, losses and concerns at some point in our lives, and even if our lives aren’t necessarily as glamourous as the SATC girls, we get to live vicariously through them – their wardrobe, their (mis)adventures – we live and love it all.”

The question is, are you prepared to live it and love it all Bohemian style? Because Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda take a glamorous girls’ trip to Abu Dhabi in the new movie, and they’re busting out more over-the-top, exotic apparel than ever before to party in the United Arab Emirates. “I am in love with the styles I am seeing in this movie,” Deisenroth said. “The look of the movie is so Bohemian chic. Deisenroth points out that watching old episodes of the HBO series can still motivate women to put together a funky outfit or style their hair a new way, and we agree.
