<p>Morse code may be a thing of the past, but this <strong>dot-dash-dot system of communication is having a serious resurgence </strong>in an unlikely form: customized jewelry! <p>So yeah, we’re all pining over the $34.95 H&amp;M trench coat that’s taken over every other commercial on TV. In case that coveted coat is sold out before the <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/neat-shop/its-official-hm-opens-in-portland-november-11/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">highly anticipated H&amp;M grand opening in Portland on Thursday, Nov. 11</span></a>, we must have a back up plan. Besides, we&#8217;re still devoted to shopping local, too, and with Portland’s ever-changing daily weather a girl needs multiple <strong>options for staying warm while looking cool</strong>.</p>
<p><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/spiewak-mcelroy-parka-military-coat-army-green-portland-fashion-shopping-coats.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-17154" title="spiewak-mcelroy-parka-military-coat-army-green-portland-fashion-shopping-coats" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/spiewak-mcelroy-parka-military-coat-army-green-portland-fashion-shopping-coats.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="311" /></a>Sonja Hanchar of <a href="http://www.pin-me-apparel.com/about.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Pin-Me Apparel boutique on North Mississippi Avenue</span></a> advocates for these very needs. “We have two types of customers: One who pops in and out of the car and is more concerned about looks than utility, and the other may be a biker who spends a lot of time in the rain.” Hanchar says both types want a look that’s “stylish, but functional, and substantial enough for rain needs.” Thankfully, the <strong>Fall 2010 outerwear trends</strong> offer something for every one of us needy Portlanders.</p>
<p>The military look is on the verge of over-exposure, but <strong>army green has become the new black</strong> because it goes with everything. At the very least purchase an inexpensive, lightweight style that will take you well into spring, and we’ll re-evaluate its “utility” in our wardrobe then.</p>
<p>Shearling, fur and leather are also having a major moment. These are worth the splurge because most cuts are timeless and a quality investment that will warm you through many winters to come. Be it faux or for real, when you make like an urban warrior you’ll never go cold or unnoticed.</p>
<p>There’s no question that ponchos are the most versatile silhouette of the season. Whether it’s a streamlined solid or an eccentric bright, designers have offered enough variety for everyone to find their perfect cape &#8212; like the Nau cape we found at Lizard Lounge, or the <a href="http://www.pendleton-usa.com/product/SONORA-JACQUARD-PONCHO/167824.uts?rv=true" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Pendleton Sonara Jacquard poncho</span></a> (below right).</p>
<p><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/pendleton-wool-sonara-jacquard-poncho-portland-fashion-shopping-winter-coats-trends-pdxneatsheet-2010.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-17155" title="pendleton-wool-sonara-jacquard-poncho-portland-fashion-shopping-winter-coats-trends-pdxneatsheet-2010" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/pendleton-wool-sonara-jacquard-poncho-portland-fashion-shopping-winter-coats-trends-pdxneatsheet-2010.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="330" /></a>It almost goes without saying, but if you don’t have a quality wool peacoat by now then it’s time to play dress up. Everyone should have a polished wool coat worthy of a professional event or special occasion. Be it double breasted or belted, these are style necessities that extend far beyond any trend. This season, it’s camel coats that politely shout conservative glamour&#8230; and we hear that!</p>
<p>If you checked <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/neat-event/portland-fashion-week-designer-shows-runway-closing-night-2010/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">The Neat Sheet&#8217;s coverage of Portland Fashion Week</span></a>, then you already know that we love us some ethnic prints and boho fun. Turn the streets of Portland into your runway by going full on nomad with un-carefully layered indigenous and Nordic prints.</p>
<p>In eco-friendly Portland, performance outerwear prices aren’t soaring, but design technology and street style wearablity are. Not only are local labels going green and offering reasonable prices, but they’re also finding ways to keep us warm in puffy down without any added bulk. So yes, it’s possible to look warm and slim. That’s a recipe for fashion and function worthy of Portland standards.</p>
<p>Here&#8217;s at look at Portland&#8217;s best shopping options for on-trend outerwear:</p>
<p><strong>Pin-Me Apparel<br />
</strong><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/spiewak-harding-coat-pin-me-apparel-portland-fashion-shopping-coats-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-17153" title="spiewak-harding-coat-pin-me-apparel-portland-fashion-shopping-coats-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/spiewak-harding-coat-pin-me-apparel-portland-fashion-shopping-coats-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="337" /></a>This North Mississippi boutique is a mecca of Spiewak brand tailored overcoats with modern detailing. The <a href="http://www.spiewak.com/fashion/product/SX193W/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Spiewak Whittridge coat</span></a> ($189) is all double-breasted business in the front with a pleated party in the back. The <a href="http://www.spiewak.com/fashion/product/SX138W/ " target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Spiewak Harding coat</span></a> ($219, right) is very military glam with its gorgeous olive green wool outer and black leather piping. This shop is tops if you’re looking for utility with a feminine touch.</p>
<p><strong>Lizard Lounge<br />
</strong>For the outdoorsy hipster with impeccable taste, this Pearl District shop has an amazing assortment of everything from coats to candles (and props for their outstanding customer service). Sip on a complimentary coffee and slip into the sustainable, locally designed <a href="http://www.nau.com/womens/categories/jackets/down-stole-024W01.html " target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Nau down stole</span></a> &#8212; a.k.a. the coolest puffy thing we’ve ever seen ($230). If you’re wanting a sleek jacket then go for a <strong>Provider ‘Ramona’ leather jacket</strong> ($585) and pair it with any of their adorable Horny Toad Plaid button-up tops ($65). C’mon this is Portland after all: A little flannel grunge is so necessary!</p>
<p><strong>Mercantile<br />
</strong>This local boutique department store is always the go-to for high end fashion. The epitome of Fall 2010 runway chic is the <a href="http://www.editnewyork.com/shop/430-shearling-bomber-jacket?source=shopstyle" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Rag &amp; Bone shearling bomber jacket</span></a> ($1,875). Treat yourself to a covetable <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/neat-stuff/fall-fashion-2010-trends-portland-shopping/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">camel wrap coat by Smythe</span></a> ($835), which we fawned over in <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/neat-stuff/fall-fashion-2010-trends-portland-shopping/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">The Neat Sheet&#8217;s Fall 2010 Portland Fashion trend story</span></a>, or be forever stylish in a <a href="http://www.ronherman.com/product/jackets/576324-27440/gryphon-hooded-timeless-trench.html?source=shopstyle" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">classic khaki Gryphon trench</span></a> ($598).</p>
<p><strong>Pendleton<br />
<span style="font-weight: normal;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/pendleton-opening-ceremony-cropped-knit-moto-jacket-portland-fashion-shopping-coats-pdxneatsheet-2010.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-17157" title="pendleton-opening-ceremony-cropped-knit-moto-jacket-portland-fashion-shopping-coats-pdxneatsheet-2010" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/10/pendleton-opening-ceremony-cropped-knit-moto-jacket-portland-fashion-shopping-coats-pdxneatsheet-2010.jpg" alt="" width="225" height="320" /></a>We’re lucky to have the retail shop of Oregon’s own historic textile and apparel manufacturer located in the heart of downtown. The quality and endurance of each garment is superb and its signature Native American prints remain in vogue as ever. They’ve gone to great lengths to keep a cult following. No, really. Check out the floor skimming <a href=" http://www.pendleton-usa.com/product/Women/OUTERWEAR/OUTERWEAR/RIMROCK-DUSTER-COAT/167863/sc/1775/sc/1775/c/1775/pc/1815.uts " target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Rimrock Duster Coat</span></a> ($488), the classic <a href="http://www.pendleton-usa.com/product/Women/OUTERWEAR/OUTERWEAR/SONORA-JACQUARD-PONCHO/167824/sc/1775/sc/1775/c/1775/pc/1815.uts" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Sonora Jacquard Poncho</span></a> ($188, above right) and of course the <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="https://www.openingceremony.us/products.asp?menuid=2&amp;designerid=239&amp;productid=25956" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Pendleton Meets Opening Ceremony cropped </span></a></span><span style="color: #a42941;"><span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="https://www.openingceremony.us/products.asp?menuid=2&amp;designerid=239&amp;productid=25956" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Knit Moto Jacket</span></a></span></span> ($460, right).</span></strong></p>
<p><strong><span style="font-weight: normal;"><strong>US Outdoor Store<br />
</strong> This sporty downtown superstore lives up to its name with its jam-packed selection of every outerwear gear a snow bunny could need. Get an inexpensive faux shearling <a href="http://www.usoutdoorstore.com/outlet/billabong-james-jacket-womens.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Billabong Bong James Jacket</span></a> ($99) or special order a slim-fitting <a href="http://www.burton.com/womens-jackets-gmp-burton-tabloid-jacket/GMP-232451,default,pd.html?start=10&amp;q=GMP" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Burton Tabloid snowboarding jacket</span></a> ($190). The olive green version, part of its Green Mountain Project collection, is environmentally friendly and totally appropriate for wearing off the slopes as well. Props to Burton rep Sarah Kuhns for pointing us towards the <a href="http://www.burton.com/mens-jackets-the-white-collection-such-a-deal-jacket/232408,default,pd.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Shaun White Collection Such a Deal Jacket</span></a> ($155-$170) that meets all your mountain needs, affordably so. We’ll honor that with our signature “Shaun White High Five” seal of approval!</span></strong></p>

<p>Chances are if you’re a Portland gal you own more than your fair share of cold weather boots. But living in the Northwest, where cool temps and rain rule, there&#8217;s always a good reason for yet another booty call. <strong>Meet your new BFF: The clog boot</strong>. It’s a hybrid of sorts that merges a sturdy wooden sole with a leather/suede upper boot, resulting in a stylish mix of comfort and practicality Portland women crave.</p>
<p><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/jet-boutique-portland-fashion-mississippi-avenue-coclico-clog-boots-ankle-booties.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-16049" title="jet-boutique-portland-fashion-mississippi-avenue-coclico-clog-boots-ankle-booties" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/jet-boutique-portland-fashion-mississippi-avenue-coclico-clog-boots-ankle-booties.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="188" /></a>“Clog booties bring modern and Old World womanly style together,” said Jennifer Thomas, owner of the multifaceted Jet boutique on Mississippi Avenue (where currently you can find the artful <strong>Coclico clog ankle booties</strong> shown right for about $415).</p>
<p>Traditional Dutch clogs were made to withstand rural conditions, and with modern upgrades they&#8217;ve become the perfect fit for a Portlander on the move who wants to ditch her agonizing heels in favor of a more comfortable platform. Thomas also credits the clog style for clean lines and practical durability in winning her seal of approval.</p>
<p>As clog boots slowly clomp to the states from overseas, Portland boutiques are set to spoil us for Fall 2010. A variety of cool clog booties are in stores already, with plenty more on order for the coming month. Don’t expect Ikea prices on these imports, as clog boots are built to last. That makes them not just a trend, but a staple worth investing in.</p>
<p>Get clogging at some our favorite local shops:</p>
<p><strong>Zelda’s Shoe Bar</strong><br />
<a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/swedish-hasbeens-jodhpur-clog-boots-portland-fashion-shopping-trends-zeldas-shoes.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-16045" title="swedish-hasbeens-jodhpur-clog-boots-portland-fashion-shopping-trends-zeldas-shoes" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/swedish-hasbeens-jodhpur-clog-boots-portland-fashion-shopping-trends-zeldas-shoes.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="183" /></a>Ah, the home of the has been! No, really. Northwest 23rd Avenue’s stylish source for designer shoes houses the uber-authentic <a href="http://www.swedishhasbeens.com/high-heeled-jodhpur-p-24.html?cPath=7" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Swedish Hasbeens  “465” Jodphur ankle boot</span></a><span style="color: #a42941;"> </span>(shown top and right, about $400). Though the brown nubuck is currently offered in store, there’s already a waiting list for the next shipment of black and navy. Zelda’s Shoe Bar, 633 N.W. 23rd Ave.; 503-226-0363. <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.zeldaspdx.com');" href="http://www.zeldaspdx.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.zeldaspdx.com</span></a></p>
<p><a href="http://www.swedishhasbeens.com/high-heeled-jodhpur-p-24.html"></a><strong>Jet</strong><br />
Owner Jennifer Thomas has the recipe for the perfectly Portland layered fall look: “Pair the <a href="http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?pid=488342&amp;fbid=154217217928037&amp;id=100000192784382" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Coclico Ndakinna bootie</span></a> with the new Jet Long Sleeve Cowl in grey bamboo, Jet Basic Legging in black, grey or brown with a Jet Ballet Skirt. Add a soft and cozy scarf from Wooden Ships and lipstick.” Wow! The only thing better than new shoes is an entire ensemble to go with it!</p>

<p><strong>Johnny Sole<br />
</strong>Be sure to pop into downtown’s iconic streetwise shoe shop this fall when its selection of clog boots arrive. We just got off the shoe horn and they&#8217;re expecting a shipment from super cool brand <a href="http://www.miz-mooz.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Miz Mooz</span></a>. <p>Do you ever look forward to pulling out your “fat pants?” Didn’t think so. Thankfully the time has come to ditch these depressing duds in favor of the recent reinvention of loose fitting pants. Let us not revert to the days of the running man, because, yes, we are indeed too legit to quit hammer pants. Time to let go of the stigma and <strong>embrace the comfort of the harem, carrot, stretch, eased or slouchy style pants</strong>. Our new go-to bottoms are offered in a variety of interesting silhouettes and roomy alternatives to your stale staples.</p>
<p><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/paul-joe-sister-valentine-cargo-pant-portland-fashion-shop-adorn-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-15912" title="paul-joe-sister-valentine-cargo-pant-portland-fashion-shop-adorn-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/paul-joe-sister-valentine-cargo-pant-portland-fashion-shop-adorn-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="370" /></a>“I wear them to pick up my kids from school, and the other moms in their track suits kind of stare,&#8221; said Tez Hartney, the minimalist-chic owner of Portland&#8217;s <a href="http://www.parallelportland.com" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Parallel Boutique</span></a>. We were equally mesmerized by Hartney and the countless looks – both casual and dressy – that she quickly put together using the <a href="http://www.parallelportland.com/products/sultan-pant" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Paul &amp; Joe Sister silk “Sultan” pant</span></a>. Be it a cropped sweater or tunic length T-shirt, this pant allows the freedom to play with proportions and versatility.</p>
<p>To step it up a notch, swap out your typical trousers and sashay in a pair of dark, silky pants with a luxurious feel. Scrunch them up mid-calf to reveal your best statement-making high heels and top it off with a simple, plain top and bold necklace. You’ll be the talk of First and Last Friday, and <strong>don’t count out pants for a wedding or special occasion </strong>either.</p>
<p>We&#8217;re not suggesting you ditch your denim and go all soft on us, but we encourage you to consider lightening up a bit with some help from Portland&#8217;s local trendsetters:</p>
<p><strong>Shop Adorn<br />
</strong>After a hugely successful offering of the celeb-endorsed J.Brand “Houlihan,” Adorn owner Nicole Whitesell has extended her cargo selection to include the <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://www.shopadornonline.com/Siwy-Denim-Marielle-Cargo-Pant-with-Welt-Pockets-p/siwymariellecargo.htm" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Siwy Denim uber-plush yet simple &#8220;Marielle”</span></a> </span>($187) and the funkier <a href="http://www.shopadornonline.com/Siwy-Denim-Valentine-Cargo-Pant-p/siwyvalentinecargo.htm" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">“Valentine” denim cargo pant styles</span></a> ($228, top and above right), both of which are plush, comfortable and meant to fit baggy at the waist. Looks as though the skinny cargo just got 15 more minutes of fame. Shop Adorn, 4759 N.E. Fremont St.; 1-888-654-0570. <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.shopadornonline.com');" href="http://www.shopadornonline.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.shopadornonline.com</span></a></p>
<p><strong>Golden Rule<br />
</strong><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/prairie-underground-savoy-pant-portland-fashion-shopping-parallel-boutique-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-15918" title="prairie-underground-savoy-pant-portland-fashion-shopping-parallel-boutique-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/08/prairie-underground-savoy-pant-portland-fashion-shopping-parallel-boutique-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="438" /></a>Didn’t mind changing in the closet (no, really) to test out the bright coral extreme drop-crotch style by local label Greater Than 3. The adorable shopgirl Wendy’s suggestion to pair it with a teal green vintage silk top sealed our deal to rock a look that extends beyond our local fashion parameter. Golden Rule, 811 E. Burnside St.; 503-477-5124. <a href="http://www.goldenruleportland.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.goldenruleportland.com</span></a></p>
<p><strong>Red Light Clothing Exchange<br />
</strong> For those unafraid to take a fashion risk, here you will find every shape, color, detaling, embellishment and fabrication possible. The Red Light boasts an incredible selection of slightly drop-crotched, often high-waisted and elastic banded pants. A little stretch in your mid-section never hurts, and a tucked in top in a contrasting fabrication defines instant, effortless chic. Red Light Clothing Exchange, 3590 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd.; 503-963-8888. <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.redlightclothingexchange.com');" href="http://www.redlightclothingexchange.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.redlightclothingexchange.com</span></a></p>
<p><strong>Goodwill Industries<br />
</strong> For the best selection of trendy retail head eastbound towards the &#8216;burbs. There’s never a guarantee of what slouchy goodness you&#8217;ll find, but for the price &#8212; and the jackpot of more than 50 outlets within 20 miles of Portland &#8212; it’s worth the trip. <a href="http://www.meetgoodwill.org/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.meetgoodwill.org</span></a></p>
<p><strong>Parallel Boutique</strong><br />
This upscale boutique isn’t short on downtown style. In addition to the line by Paul &amp; Joe Sister mentioned above, you can slip into a the <a href="http://www.parallelportland.com/products/savoy-pant" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Praire Underground “Savoy” loose pant</span></a> ($155, above right) in a basic black or trendy tan silk/hemp blend. Parallel Boutique, 1022A N.W. Johnson St.; 503-274-8882. <a onclick="javascript:pageTracker._trackPageview('/outbound/article/www.parallelpdx.com');" href="http://www.parallelpdx.com/"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.parallelpdx.com</span></a></p>
<p><strong>Mario’s</strong><br />
This chic downtown boutique department store has the perfect soft substitute for work trousers by way of a gorgeous pair of Brunello Cuccinelli Italian wool pants ($735), made to hang low with a pleated front and ankle cuffs. Belt these babies and off you go.</p>

<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">It may seem counter-intuitive to do a trend piece on sunglasses in the middle of summer after most people have probably shopped them back in May. However, if you’re anything like us, you have probably lost and/or broken that sweet pair of Ray Ban aviators you thought were so cool all those months ago. Well, <strong>now is your (second) chance to get ahead on the trendiest of trends in the sun-covering eyewear racket</strong>. We can see the future… and it’s looking like we could use a new pair of shades.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/myoptic-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet2.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-15298" title="myoptic portland fashion pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/myoptic-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet2-196x300.jpg" alt="" width="196" height="300" /></a>Sunglasses have always had the power to transform.</strong> Take it from Jack Nicholson who once said, “With my sunglasses on, I&#8217;m Jack Nicholson. Without them, I&#8217;m fat and 60.” Truer words have never been spoken, and thus we began our quest for our own pair of Jack-worthy shades that will make us look cooler, thinner, sexier, and yes, more mysterious.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">Dr. Summy To, owner and optometrist at the newly opened <a href="http://www.pdxeyes.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Myoptic Optometry</span></a> on North Williams Street, had a few wise words for Portland&#8217;s serious sunglass shoppers. Being a doctor, she started off with some technical advice.<strong> “Always make sure you have 100 percent UVA and UVB protection in your sunglasses.” </strong>Check. Don’t get cheapo frames from drugstore stands. She also mentions that, “polarization makes a world of difference in cutting down glare, and we highly recommend it to all of our clients.&#8221;<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">But what about style? “Big is still in, though not the kind that just takes over your whole face like they did a couple seasons ago,” says To. <strong>“Portland definitely embraces the step back into the &#8217;60s and &#8217;70s, but with a new millennium flare.”</strong> She recommends classic styles, such as the aviator tear-drop, with bold hits of color. “Thick black Wayfarer types are still Nuevo-retro, but I love the more unique, angular shapes with highlight color – a dash of orange or turquoise behind the basic black and brown giving it that bright accent without the clash.”</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/jack-nicholson-portland-pdxneatsheet4.jpg"><img class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-15286" title="jack-nicholson-portland pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/jack-nicholson-portland-pdxneatsheet4-150x150.jpg" alt="" width="150" height="150" /></a>We’ve cut down the glare and found the best places to shop for face-flattering frames in Portland. And the winners are&#8230;<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Myoptic Optometry</strong> – This new addition to the Portland eye scene (if we do in fact have one of those) carries unique, can’t-find-‘em-anywhere styles from brands like Paul Frank, SALT Optics sunwear, Wiley X and Bolle. Added bonus:<strong> Stop by Wednesday, July 28 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. to get FREE single vision standard plastic lenses with frame purchase</strong>.  There will be a yummy Italian soda bar to sip on while you shop plus a chance to win a Paul Frank Cruiser that will be raffled off during the evening. Now this is how eye glass shopping was meant to be (pic above right). 3978 N. Williams Avenue; 503-493-7070. <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://www.pdxeyes.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.pdxeyes.com</span></a></span><br />

<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/le-train-bleu-sunglasses-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet3.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-15295" title="le train bleu sunglasses portland fashion pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/le-train-bleu-sunglasses-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet3-300x152.jpg" alt="" width="231" height="117" /></a>Le Train Bleu</strong> – We are officially in love with these multi-tasking steam-punk versions they have in stock right now. This Sherlock Holmes-esque pair of spectacles features clear lens glasses with removable clip-on sunglass lenses. If only we could decide whether to go bad-guy with black frames or good-guy brown. Either way, we&#8217;ll be solving style crimes in no time. The shocking twist? They&#8217;re only $33! <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://letrainbleu.com/derridaglasses.aspx" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Derrida $33</span></a> </span></span>(left).<span style="color: #3e261c;"> <a href="http://letrainbleu.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.letrainbleu.com</span></a><br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Shwood</strong> – Fever (or is it fervor?) for this locally-made all natural wooden sunglasses have been hitting the hipster nation hard all around. Why, we even gave a pair away to a <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/shwood-portland-frames-pdxneatsheet1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-15275" title="shwood portland frames pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/shwood-portland-frames-pdxneatsheet1-300x133.jpg" alt="" width="230" height="102" /></a>lucky Neat Sheet reader, and trust us, their reputation will only continue to blossom. A Portland style staple for all seasons, you can find these bad boys at shops such as Local 35 on Hawthorne and Lizard Lounge downtown. A fun take on a classic, we like the dark mysterious vibe of the <a href="http://shop.shwoodshop.com/Shwood_Canby_Sunglasses_East_Indian_Rosewood_Brn_p/can_eir.htm" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">East Indian Rosewood Canby pair</span></a> ($105, right).  6150 S.W. Arctic Drive. <a href="http://www.shwoodshop.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.shwoodshop.com</span></a><br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Visage Eyewear</strong> – This Pearl District shop/doctors office/art gallery is an upscale hideaway for shades <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/ic-berlin-international-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-15287" title="ic-berlin-international portland fashion pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/07/ic-berlin-international-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet1-300x154.jpg" alt="" width="230" height="118" /></a>and frames that are works of art in themselves. Those that work here travel the world to find the newest styles from across globe. These oversized <a href="http://www.visageeyewear.com/frames.htm" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Kieselstein-Cord sunglasses</span></a> are perfect for sneaky hotel rendezvous, or for looking stylish while dining on sidewalk patios. For a decidedly Eastern European look, we like these German-made ice-blue Ic-Berlin pair (right). 1046 N.W. <p><span style="color: #3e261c;">Swimsuit shopping is the bane of existence for most people out there (not just the ladies mind you, we know many a guy whose pasty, un-toned skin shudders at the thought). It’s almost enough to make us dread the summer months, if we weren’t so desperate for them after all the clouds and rain. This year, however, things are a little more forgiving. <strong>Retro styled, demure one-pieces and two-pieces with high-waisted bikini bottoms</strong> have been a staple of Portland’s (not so polite) style society for a while now, but this summer the trend has swum from sea to shining sea – in addition to floating down a river or two with a can of PBR.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/popina-swimwear-boutique-swimming-suits-swimsuits-retro-vintage-inspired-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-14871" title="popina-swimwear-boutique-swimming-suits-swimsuits-retro-vintage-inspired-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/popina-swimwear-boutique-swimming-suits-swimsuits-retro-vintage-inspired-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="234" /></a>Pamela Levenson</strong>, owner and designer of the cult Northeast Portland swim shop <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://www.popinaswimwear.com" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Popina Swimwear</span></a></span>, has been stitching up figure flattering suits inspired by the classic shapes of the 1940’s and &#8217;50s for years now. “The one-piece is the ultimate classy look that still leaves room for a little mystery,” she said.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">Levenson will reveal her latest retro-inspired swimwear collection on the rooftop runway of the <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/neat-event/up-in-the-air-summer-affair-neat-sheet-launch-party-rooftop-fashion-show-portland-hotel-deluxe/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">&#8220;Up in the Air&#8221; Summer Affair Fashion Show + The Neat Sheet launch party</span></a> on Friday, July 9, by the way. Plus, our friends at Popina and Willamette Week will give one lucky winner <strong>free passes to the party and a FREE Popina Swimming Suit</strong>.<span style="color: #a42941;"> </span><a href="http://wweek.com/contest/index.php?contest=upintheair" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Enter to win here!</span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">While few would describe Portlanders as shy, apparently <strong>when it comes to swimwear, our preferences are surprisingly traditional</strong>. “I had a very interesting experience in my shop a couple years ago,” said Levenson. “A customer just got back from Southern California where she bought a string bikini. She wore it to Grant Pool and felt really out of place. Portland swimwear styles tend to be a little more conservative than, say, Southern California.”</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Jantzen-Vamp-Buttercup-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-14873" title="Jantzen-Vamp-Buttercup-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Jantzen-Vamp-Buttercup-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet1.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="200" /></a>Not that we’re all uptight, Levenson assures us. “Portland has a fun, throwback, come-as-you-are aesthetic.” The biggest perk of choosing a classic, modest style means you can have fun with bright, bold colors. Levenson’s picks for this summer are suits in canary yellow (a color that flatters pretty much all skin tones) and grape.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">The sun is beginning to peak out, so we surfed the racks to find <strong>the best swimming suits in Portland</strong> for some stylish, retro inspired fun in the sun.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Popina Swimwear</strong> – Popina has perfected the art of the retro swimming suit, so make it your first local stop for fab fitting suits in updated classic styles. There are so many great options to choose from right now. Our fave is the so-cute <a href="http://www.popinaswimwear.com/vintage-swimwear-the-grace-red-white-one-piece-bathing-suit-pr-300.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Popina red and white polka-dot The Grace </span></a><a href="http://www.popinaswimwear.com/vintage-swimwear-the-grace-red-white-one-piece-bathing-suit-pr-300.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">one piece</span></a> (above right, $88). And alongside their own line, they also carry select styles from Jantzen, Portland’s original swimsuit manufacturer. We&#8217;re fans of Jantzen’s fun yellow <a href="http://www.popinaswimwear.com/jantzen-vamp-womens-one-piece-bathing-swimsuit-buttercup-swimwear-c-61-p-1-pr-323.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Vamp swimming suit in buttercup</span></a> ($75, above – on sale from $100!). Popina Swimwear, 4831 N.E. 42nd Ave.; 503-282-5159. <a href="http://www.popinaswimwear.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.popinaswimwear.com</span></a></span></p>

We are also coveting her stock of various high-waisted bottoms. Look chic and sexy while hiding our stomach? Yes please! Those<a href="http://www.lilleboutique.com/swim-wear/santiago-high-waist-bikini" target="_blank"> <span style="color: #a42941;">Santiago bikini bottoms</span></a> ($220, right) are <em>so</em> ours. Lille Boutique, 1007 E. Burnside; 503-232-0333. <a href="http://www.lilleboutique.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.lilleboutique.com</span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>La Drama Queen</strong> – Don’t let the name throw you, this Etsy swim-and-lingerie shop is entirely local and chock full of vintage-inspired suits, tankini’s and more. The <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/45158965/havana-two-piece-vintage-inspired" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Havana two-piece suit</span></a> ($130) will make you feel like you’re starring in a Slim Aarons photograph in Palm Beach, even if you’re just playing beer pong in a friend’s back yard. Or you could dress up in Barbie’s classic <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/48187942/vintage-inspired-one-piece-barbie" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">vintage striped one piece swimming suit</span></a> ($115, top pic) and watch as all the Ken dolls melt beside you. </span><span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://www.etsy.com/shop/ladramaqueen" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.etsy.com/shop/ladramaqueen</span></a></span></p>

It’s a little naughty, but oh-so-nice at the same time. The bright floral pattern, high waist, and teeny top are a perfect balance of &#8217;90s grunge and &#8217;50s modesty. Frances May, 1013 S.W. Washington St.; 503-227-3402. <a href="http://www.francesmay.com/shop/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.francesmay.com</span></a></span></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Nordstrom</strong> – If you like spending the entire day naked in a dressing room trying on swimsuit after swimsuit in hopes of finding the perfect one, then you might want to consider stopping by this mega Northwest department store. Of course, no one likes trying on bathing suits, but it&#8217;s nice to have lots of options, right? You can find some glamorous, Marilyn Monroe-worthy options styles right now, like this <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://shop.nordstrom.com/S/3085406?cm_cat=datafeed&amp;cm_pla=swimwear:women:swimsuit_(complete)&amp;cm_ite=carmen_marc_valvo_'metal_mesh'_plunging_halter_one_piece:292036&amp;cm_ven=Froogle&amp;mr:trackingCode=FA2C606E-1968-DF11-9DA0-002219319097&amp;mr:referralID=NA" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Carmen Marc Valvo &#8216;Metal Mesh&#8217; Plunging Halter One Piece</span></a> </span>($167). It&#8217;s sexy, body-flattering, and made for poolside cocktails. <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://www.nordstrom.com" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.nordstrom.com</span></a></span><br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Old Navy</strong> – Sometimes it’s nice to have a few cheap suits you can rotate throughout the summer, which is why we like to hit up Old Navy’s impressive swimwear section every now and then. Right now they’ve got a sweet selection of cute<a href="http://oldnavy.gap.com/browse/category.do?cid=48061" target="_blank"> <span style="color: #a42941;">ruffled one-pieces</span> </a>for a mere $29.95! <p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><em>By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor</em></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">Spring 2010 runway collections by fashion powerhouses <a href="http://www.chanel.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Chanel</span></a> and <a href="http://www.dolcegabbana.com/dg/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Dolce &amp; Gabbana</span></a> took the <strong>humble art of crochet and elevated it to new levels of chic, </strong>as both designers simultaneously spun out high-fashion, craft-based looks. In Portland (a.k.a. craft capitol U.S.A.), this was hardly anything new. We’ve always been ahead of the game when it comes to the crafty side of things, particularly homemade fashion, which makes this week’s neat summer trend right up our craft-circle-lovin’ alley. Grab your hook and needle <strong>‘cause crochet is cool once again</strong> (although, for people who love arts and crafts as much as Portlanders do, it was really never anything but).</span></p>
<p><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/noa-noa-spring-2010-collection-narcisse-boutique-portland-fashion-trends-crochet-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-14539" title="noa-noa-spring-2010-collection-narcisse-boutique-portland-fashion-trends-crochet-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/noa-noa-spring-2010-collection-narcisse-boutique-portland-fashion-trends-crochet-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="382" /></a>“Crochet is rooted in the past, when women would create beautiful things for their homes and their loved ones,&#8221; said <strong>Dawn Bush</strong>, who co-owns <a href="http://shopnarcisse.typepad.com/narcisse/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Narcisse</span></a> with <strong>Heidi Goldsmith</strong>. This downtown gem of a boutique carries the highly covetable European line Noa Noa, whose latest collection just happens to be chock-full of cute, crocheted pieces (right). &#8221;I think people are attracted to the contrast this creates with the ultra modern designs that have been floating around for the past few years,” said Bush. “Pieces with a little bit of crochet detail add a bit of dignity and femininity to an otherwise common piece.”</p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">If you’re getting bad flashbacks of heavy 1970’s crocheted fashion, you need to go back even further to get the right idea. Bush says the current crochet craze is more about fine and elegant details rather than an overabundance of pattern and frills, which offers some relief from the heavy, cloggy feeling often associated with crochet. “Noa Noa&#8217;s current collection relies heavily upon influences from 1940&#8217;s Paris,&#8221; she said. &#8220;It is a romantic collection with stripes, dots, small floral prints, and ruffles mixed with cotton shirts with cuffs and gentlemanly details. With a little creative cross-mixing, <strong>you’ll be feeling much more Biba girl than granny</strong>.&#8221;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">While it certainly is fun to create your own clothes, for those of you lacking the requisite needle or time management skills, we’ve crafted this neat list of <strong>the coolest crocheted finds in Portland:</strong></span></p>
<p><strong><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/bastille-top-noa-noa-narcisse-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-14540" title="bastille-top-noa-noa-narcisse-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/bastille-top-noa-noa-narcisse-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="315" /></a>Narcisse</strong> – If your style aspirations lean towards innocent French ingénue, you’ll fall head over heels for this <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://shopnarcisse.myshopify.com/products/mollyngton-cotton" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">white cotton Noa Noa Mollyngton dress</span></a> </span>with strips of crocheted lace ($199). Equally charming is Noa Noa’s<span style="color: #a42941;"> <a href="http://shopnarcisse.myshopify.com/search?q=crochet" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">St. Basille pinstriped tank</span></a></span> with dark navy crochet detail (right, $67). Both pieces beg to be taken on summer picnics and breezy bike rides through the countryside. Le sigh. 1015 S.W. Washington St.; 503-224-2422. <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://shopnarcisse.myshopify.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">shopnarcisse.typepad.com</span></a></span></p>
<p><strong>Lille Boutique</strong> – Good for making your boyfriend want to stay in on a Friday night, these candy colored <a href="http://www.lilleboutique.com/shop/lingerie/hosiery/thigh-highs/5680-crocheted-cotton-thigh-highs/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">cotton thigh-highs</span></a> ($24) from Lille boutique allow your legs to breathe while still looking (super) hot. We’ll take multiple pairs in each color please; we’ll be staying in all week. 1007 E. Burnside; 503-232-0333. <a href="http://www.lilleboutique.com/shop/lingerie/hosiery/thigh-highs/5680-crocheted-cotton-thigh-highs/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.lilleboutique.com</span></a></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Powell&#8217;s Books </strong>– There’s no time like the present to pick up a new hobby, especially one as fashionably fruitful as crocheting. Stop by the behemoth craft section of our beloved literary giant to find hundreds (literally) of how-to books. We like <a href="http://www.powells.com/biblio/6-9780740778278-1#" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Crobots: Twenty Amigurumi Robots to Make </span></a>($8.95) just ‘cause those handmade Japanese bots are so dang cute. 1005 W. This sexy <a href="http://www.parallelportland.com/products/hampton-sweater" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Rag and Bone Hampton sweater</span></a> ($220) is a perfect cover up to throw one when temps drop to the low 60’s on sultry summer nights. And the intricate crochet detail on the back of this<a href="http://www.parallelportland.com/products/convertible-top" target="_blank"> <span style="color: #a42941;">Covet convertible top</span></a> (right, $74) adds a sweet homemade vibe to an otherwise architectural tank. 1022A N.W. Johnson St.; 503-274-8882. <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://www.parallelportland.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.parallelpdx.com</span></a></span></span></p>

<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">It’s like a jungle sometimes, it makes ya wonder&#8230; why not dress the part? This summer Portland fashion is going back to its roots, ditching the urban landscape for the hot, African safari. Unleash your inner animal and look hot (or cool, depending) with this season’s latest haul of <strong>wild prints fit for an Amazon-by-way-of-the-Willamette queen</strong>.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/animal-prints-wild-trends-covet-raven-dress-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-14261" title="animal-prints-wild-trends-covet-raven-dress-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/animal-prints-wild-trends-covet-raven-dress-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="280" /></a>As is common when what’s old is new, animal prints this time around tend to meow more than roar. “Animal prints were huge in the 90&#8217;s,</span><span style="color: #3e261c;"> then it got overdone and for a while was definitely a fashion no-no,&#8221; said <strong>Amy Deisenroth</strong>, manager of Meringue boutique in Lake Oswego.</span><span style="color: #3e261c;"> &#8220;</span><span style="color: #3e261c;">Now they are back, but with a more sophisticated feel. It&#8217;s kinda like &#8216;learn from the past&#8217; – don&#8217;t repeat the mistakes from the 90&#8217;s but bring back what people loved about prints with an updated, modern feel.”<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">We tracked down <a href="http://www.shopstandingup.us" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Stand Up Comedy</span></a> purveyor (and stylish minx) <strong>Diana Kim</strong> after spotting a pair of python oxfords in her East Burnside shop, and we asked how to pull off this trend without looking like a beast. “Avoid exposed boobs – not even a little –stretch fabrics, and multi-colors,” warned Kim. “Any modicum of restraint, even a slight one, should serve you well.” </span>Deisenroth<span style="color: #3e261c;"> echoed Kim&#8217;s statement, advising us non-Katy Perry types to <strong>stick with animal prints in neutrals</strong> such as grey, black, tan, white or navy.<br />
</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">So why does this trend hold particular appeal for Portland-area fashion pride? &#8220;Animal skins are associated with a vague sort of rebellion, a toughness, that perhaps appeals to the anti-fashion nature of many Portlanders,&#8221; Kim said.</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/zonkey-wild-animal-prints-trends-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet-2010.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-14252" title="zonkey-wild-animal-prints-trends-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet-2010" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/zonkey-wild-animal-prints-trends-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet-2010.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="192" /></a>Speaking of anti-fashion, </span>Deisenroth<span style="color: #3e261c;"> gave us some final words of wisdom in reference to this new breed of animal style. “Fashion should be a fun way to express part of who you are, so if you are wild and crazy – then just go for it! Really, it comes down to the woman wearing the print. If she&#8217;s not trashy, then what she&#8217;s wearing isn&#8217;t trashy either.”</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">No matter what your power animal is (personally, <strong>we’re partial to zonkeys</strong>), this season is all about untamed fashion. Did you hear that? It’s the call of the wild. Are you (wo)man enough to answer? </span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;">We prowled the streets of Portland on the hunt for the best in animal attire. Here’s what we tracked&#8230;</span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/le-train-bleu-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet2.jpg"><img class="alignright size-medium wp-image-14200" title="le train bleu portland fashion pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/le-train-bleu-portland-fashion-pdxneatsheet2-207x300.jpg" alt="" width="207" height="300" /></a>Solestruck</strong> – Not for the faint of heart (or wobbly of step) these<span style="color: #a42941;"> <a href="http://www.solestruck.com/jeffrey-campbell-tick-fur-dark-brown-zebra/index.html" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Jeffrey Campbell Tick Fur</span></a> </span>stunners are showstoppers in every sense of the word. Available in either cheetah or zebra print and studded to the max, you’re sure to be the fiercest animal in town ($179.95). 718 N.W. 11th Ave.; 503-224-3591. <a href="http://www.solestruck.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.solestruck.com</span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Le Train Bleu</strong> – This<span style="color: #a42941;"> <a href="http://letrainbleu.com/leotasselscarfbyanne-marieherckes.aspx" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Leo Tassel leopard print scarf</span></a></span><a href="http://letrainbleu.com/leotasselscarfbyanne-marieherckes.aspx" target="_blank"> </a>(right, $118) designed by Anne-Marie Herckes, who has studied with Viktor and Rolf, is a fab way to do this trend without a lot of fuss. We love the scarf’s triangle shape, fringe tassels and purrrfect print (sorry.) This all-season accessory will add oomph to a simple grey tee and cutoffs. <a href="http://letrainbleu.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.letrainbleu.com</span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Parallel</strong> – Not to gloat or anything, but we have found your absolute best summer dress. You’re so gonna covet this </span><a href="http://www.parallelportland.com/collections/women/products/raven-dress" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Raven dress by Covet</span></a> (above right, $128) <span style="color: #3e261c;">for its lightweight feel and go-anywhere length. Made from 30 percent silk and 70 percent cotton, which is the ultimate fabric ratio for warm weather. Plus the print is way adorable. Also digging the<span style="color: #a42941;"> <a href="http://www.parallelportland.com/products/snake-skin-convertible-clutch" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">MS by Martine Sitbon convertible snakeskin clutch</span></a></span> ($199) for its versatility and creepy-cool wet looking print. Parallel, 1022A N.W. Johnson St.; 503-274-8882. <a href="http://www.parallelportland.com" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.parallelpdx.com</span></a></span></p>
<p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong> </strong><a href="http://www.shopstandingup.us/indexhibit/ongoing/dieppa-restrepo/" target="_blank"></a></span></p>
<p><strong>Meringue</strong> – This shop has an African safari’s worth of animal print-adorned looks and accessories. These ruffled <a href="http://meringueboutique.com/product.php?productid=8497&amp;cat=0&amp;page=1" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Juicy Couture Rush ballet flats</span></a> are cuter than we thought snakeskin could possibly be ($198). We can picture ourselves wearing this <a href="http://meringueboutique.com/product.php?productid=8365&amp;cat=0&amp;page=1" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Vita Chiave Python Cuff Bracelet</span></a> ($94) with its 24-k gold lock on our wrist every day this summer and into fall. Plus, this sheer <a href="http://meringueboutique.com/product.php?productid=8426&amp;cat=0&amp;page=1" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Joie Joann leopard top</span></a> ($172) is great for lightweight layering. Meringue Boutique, 385 First St., Lake Oswego; 503-635-1063. <a href="http://meringueboutique.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">www.meringueboutique.com</span></a></p>

This modern, timeless shoe is beautifully androgynous, completely cool and utterly refined. Stand Up Comedy, 811 E. <p><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Urban Outfitters</strong> – Watch out, ‘cause Urban Outfitters is going wild. From lion growling tees to leopard spotted home décor, this hipster shopping hole is prime hunting ground for cheap animal prints. We like the <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&amp;navAction=jump&amp;id=18635375&amp;search=true&amp;isProduct=true&amp;parentid=SEARCH+RESULTS&amp;color=019" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Leopard Brow Plastic Sunglasses</span></a></span> ($14) and <a href="http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/urban/catalog/productdetail.jsp?_dyncharset=ISO-8859-1&amp;navAction=jump&amp;id=16800708&amp;search=true&amp;isProduct=true&amp;parentid=SEARCH+RESULTS&amp;color=020" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">snakeskin watch</span></a> ($24). <p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #3e261c;"><em>By Erin Flesch and Karen Vitt, NEAT Rose City petal pickers</em></span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Spring fashion in The Rose City comes with a few thorns. We’re grateful for the citywide parade of sweet-smelling blooms and floral-filled fantasies of <a href="http://www.rosefestival.org/"><span style="color: #a42941;">Portland Rose Festival</span></a> (which is under way now), but we could do without the prick of this never-ending dreary June weather. This spring, however, <strong>Portland fashion is catching up to its rosy reputation</strong>. Despite less than desirable weather, the fashion forecast is bright, and no matter where you look local fashion is coming up roses.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/she-she-pdx-oregon-rose-t-shirt-tee-union-rose-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet1.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-13761" title="she-she-pdx-oregon-rose-t-shirt-tee-union-rose-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/she-she-pdx-oregon-rose-t-shirt-tee-union-rose-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-pdxneatsheet1.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="174" /></a>From indie Portland clothing and jewelry designers to local boutiques and department stores shipping in national names, retailers across the board are offering up gardens of rose printed clothing, rose blooms trimming shoes and handbags, rosebud jewelry and rosy scented beauty products, giving our Rose City moniker <strong>more petal power than ever for Spring/Summer 2010</strong>.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #3e261c;"><strong>Jenny Greenup</strong>, designer of the local line <a href="http://www.sheshepdx.etsy.com" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">She-She Pdx</span></a> and previous co-owner of Garment boutique on Hawthorne, has embraced Portland&#8217;s trademark rose and included the motif in her latest design, alongside the famous “Made in Oregon” logo. “It is a tribute to my love of Portland,” Greenup said, referencing her <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/42076912/oregon-rose-tank?utm_source=Facebook&amp;utm_medium=PageTools&amp;utm_campaign=Share" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Oregon Rose tank top</span></a> design (right, $25 at <a href="http://www.unionrosepdx.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Union Rose boutique</span></a>). “I love to incorporate Portland-ish things into my designs, and the rose was just begging to be on a shirt. When the roses finally bloom in the city, it just feels like Portland.”<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #3e261c;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/hopeful-monsters-rose-city-tank-top-tattoo-inspired-screenprinted-portland-fashion-shopping-trends-2010-roses-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-13765" title="hopeful-monsters-rose-city-tank-top-tattoo-inspired-screenprinted-portland-fashion-shopping-trends-2010-roses-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/hopeful-monsters-rose-city-tank-top-tattoo-inspired-screenprinted-portland-fashion-shopping-trends-2010-roses-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="262" /></a>And while Portland may lay claim to The City of Roses title, we can’t claim this trend is of purely local origins. <strong>Rose rage is slowly but surely hitting the entire nation</strong>. “I have seen more roses popping up in fashion lately,” Greenup confirms. “They add a nice girly touch that can spice up your outfit.”<br />
</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #3e261c;">We&#8217;re especially excited to see so many different variations on the rose theme, too. They&#8217;re turning up in unexpected colors, like the charming Victorian <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/45107058/blue-day-rose-garden?ref=sr_list_3&amp;ga_search_query=roses+portland&amp;ga_search_type=handmade&amp;ga_page=2&amp;includes[]=tags&amp;includes[]=title" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Blue Day Rose Garden earrings</span></a> by local designer <strong>Irina Schaffer</strong> of <span style="color: #a42941;"><a href="http://www.peapodtreasures.com/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Peapod Treasures</span></a></span></span> ($16, top);<span style="color: #3e261c;"> in a delicate riot of English garden floral prints, like these <a href="http://letrainbleu.com/40sfloralshorts.aspx" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">retro &#8217;40s floral rose shorts</span></a> ($42) from the <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/neat-stuff/le-train-blue-pop-up-shop-portland-fashion-shopping/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Le Train Bleu Portland Pop-Up Shop</span></a>; and in slightly punky, tattoo-inspired rose motifs, like <strong>Amelia Blakeman&#8217;s</strong> screenprinted <a href="http://www.etsy.com/listing/25383427/city-of-roses-tank-top?ref=sr_list_15&amp;ga_search_query=roses+portland&amp;ga_search_type=all&amp;ga_page=2&amp;includes[]=tags&amp;includes[]=title" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Hopeful Monsters City of Roses tank top</span></a> ($15, right).</span></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><span style="color: #3e261c;">As rose adorned fashion continues to bloom through summer, we’ll assume it’s a subtle nod to the awesomeness of our pretty city. For locals who want to show some Portland pride, here are a few favorite <strong>local</strong> <strong>shops and designers catering to floral-craving fashionistas</strong>.</span></p>

<p style="text-align: left;"><em>By Karen Vitt, NEAT editor in chief</em></p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Love it or hate it (or love to hate it), <a href=" “Sex and the City” " target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">&#8220;Sex and the City&#8221;</span></a> has permeated popular culture and fashion for more than a decade, inspiring women to live large and dress large, whether they live in the Big Apple or the Rose City. And here in Portland, far from the bright lights and $1,000 shoe prices of the big city, local women still are anticipating <strong>another dose of fashion fabulousness</strong> with tomorrow&#8217;s release of <a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/neat-stuff/sex-and-the-city-cast-member-lookalike-contest-bridgeport-village-portland-fashio/" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">&#8220;Sex and the City 2.&#8221;</span></a></p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sex-an-the-city-2-inspired-fasion-portland-bohemian-moroccan-exotoc-ethnic-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-13537" title="sex-an-the-city-2-inspired-fasion-portland-bohemian-moroccan-exotoc-ethnic-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/sex-an-the-city-2-inspired-fasion-portland-bohemian-moroccan-exotoc-ethnic-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="250" height="176" /></a>&#8220;Portland is about as laid-back as a big city can get, yet we still have a strong appreciation for fashion and style,&#8221; said <strong>Amy Deisenroth</strong>, a loyal fan of the show and sales manager of trendsetting <a href="www.meringueboutique.com" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Meringue Boutique</span></a>. &#8220;Portland women love &#8216;Sex and the City&#8217; because of the characters. No matter how different our lives may be from the ladies on the show, their stories are so relatable. We have all experienced those same hopes, dreams, losses and concerns at some point in our lives, and even if our lives aren&#8217;t necessarily as glamourous as the SATC girls, we get to live vicariously through them – their wardrobe, their (mis)adventures – we live and love it all.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">The question is, are you prepared to live it and love it all Bohemian style? Because Carrie, Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda take a glamorous girls&#8217; trip to Abu Dhabi in the new movie, and they&#8217;re busting out <strong>more over-the-top, exotic apparel than ever before</strong> to party in the United Arab Emirates. And frankly, even if every critic in the country pans the new film (sorry, folks, it&#8217;s true, the champagne has fizzled), we still want to watch what imaginative ensembles the fashion foursome dreams up for all that Middle Eastern cocktail sipping, camel trekking and bazaar shopping.</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"><a href="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/nora-catherine-earrings-anne-bocci-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-sex-and-the-city-style-pdxneatsheet.jpg"><img class="alignright size-full wp-image-13542" title="nora-catherine-earrings-anne-bocci-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-sex-and-the-city-style-pdxneatsheet" src="http://pdxneatsheet.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/nora-catherine-earrings-anne-bocci-boutique-portland-fashion-shopping-sex-and-the-city-style-pdxneatsheet.jpg" alt="" width="200" height="201" /></a>&#8220;I am in love with the styles I am seeing in this movie,&#8221; Deisenroth said. &#8220;The look of the movie is <strong>so Bohemian chic</strong>. I love this look because it is a style that women of any age and body type can embrace and enjoy. It is not overly youthful or old and stuffy. The free-flowing fabrics, gold jewelry, sandals – whether you are 25 or 65 there is something out there for you.&#8221;</p>
<p style="text-align: left;">Deisenroth points out that watching old episodes of the HBO series can still motivate women to put together a funky outfit or style their hair a new way, and we agree. So why not let the new movie&#8217;s imaginative use of resortwear-meets-streetwear inspire you to experiment with exotic color and texture this summer. We&#8217;ve rounded up some of the best <strong>bold jewelry, metallic-trimmed tunics, colorful maxi dresses and golden sandals</strong> to complete your &#8220;Sex and the Rose City&#8221; style. This spectacular <a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_0HMFbeyEUx8/S-M_bbMFZ3I/AAAAAAAAFko/pZMGXza2e0o/s1600/IMG_0285_large.jpg" target="_blank"><span style="color: #a42941;">Ultra Jacket by Osei-Duro and Complex Geometries</span></a> can be worn as a dress, a jacket, a poncho, a vest or even shorts – how perfect is that multifunctionality when packing for a far-off destination? Bonus: Una will <strong>mark down all clothing and accessories by 30 percent</strong> from Friday, May 28 to Sunday, May 30, so you can score this piece on sale. Double Bonus: The black-and-gold printed fabric is a traditional waxed cotton made in Ghana, where the designers work with local women&#8217;s co-ops to help them build a sustainable future. We&#8217;ll toast to that – and with the traditional Sex and the City cosmopolitan, of course. Una, 2802 S.E.
