VJ Kittyrox, a.k.a. Portland’s brilliantly cool Davina LaRondelle, has hosted her wildly popular weekly ’80s Video Dance Attack nights at Lola’s Room beneath the Crystal Ballroom for four years, and now for one night she’ll move the whole show to Wonder Ballroom to ring in the New Year in a larger space. But to be clear – it’s not just a New Year’s Eve dance party. It’s a music video and light show all set to the backbeat of classic ’80s dance tracks we love.
“It’s really a super-sized ‘80s night,” LaRondelle said of the New Year’s Eve party. “Four giant screens will project music videos from the ‘80s, along with party favors and decorations. I’ll play a lot of my typical hits – Madonna’s ‘Like a Virgin,’ Men without Hats’ ‘Safety Dance,’ Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller,’ Prince’s ‘Kiss,’ along with big hits from Joan Jett, The Cure, the B-52’s, Billy Idol, Violent Femmes, George Michael, and on and on!”
LaRondelle said the midnight countdown will feature special video footage of vintage ‘80s Times Square New Year’s Eve countdowns, and then she’ll spin us off into Prince’s ‘1999′ (“the best New Year’s Eve song ever!”) after a traditional Auld Lang Syne sing-along.
“It’s all about letting go and hearing a large variety of ‘80s music – from butt rock to hip hop to New Wave – and just dancing your ass off,” LaRondelle said. “There really always is a positive, happy mood present in the room, and having it on New Year’s Eve will just amplify that 100 times over.”
