Need an excellent excuse to drag out this Christmas thing just a little bit longer? King of kitsch Charles Phoenix, a pop-culture humorist and author of numerous neat, Americana-themed coffee table books, will present his hilarious Charles Phoenix Retro Holiday Slide Show at Portland’s Hollywood Theatre, 7 p.m. this Tuesday, Dec. 29.

charlesphoenix-retro-holiday-portland-pdxPhoenix, a regular correspondent for National Public Radio and The Martha Stewart Show, will share with Portland his massive collection of found Kodachrome slides from the 1950’s and ’60s, portraying the bizarre best of mid-century holiday life and style.

View full color images featuring retro scenes of Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Easter, Forth of July and Halloween, presented in classic living room slideshow style with Phoenix’s sly commentary. For example, he calls the slide above (which was gathered along with the others from thrift stores and flea markets across the country) “Bondage Christmas party.”

This looks like bright, sparkly fun for lovers of so many tasteless, Technicolor things – aluminum Christmas trees, cocktail weenie towers, BB guns, life-size plastic dolls and gaudy, drunken housewives. Neat nostalgia!
