Fashion and art go together like The Neat Sheet + happy hour cocktails, so it stands to reason that the Portland Institute of Contemporary Art (PICA) exhibition at lower East Burnside indie fashion shop Stand Up Comedy will yield nothing but positive results. “Cool Art,” an ongoing poster series curated by artist Rob Halverson, will be on view (and on sale!) at Stand Up Comedy from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, April 1, and admission to the show is F-R-E-E.
“Cool Art” produces art posters and exhibitions in morphing configurations. This event will be the first of six editions from the ongoing series, and will feature new works from artists Noam Rappaport, Santiago Cucullu, Lucas DeGuilio, Matt Connors, Matthew Higgs and Amy Yao.
Halverson himself is no stranger to the Portland art scene. His 2007 exhibition “Space is a Place” was part of PICA’s Time-Based Art Festival. Future presentations of “Cool Art” will be held at the Art Since The Summer of ’69 Gallery in New York City later this year, meaning now is your chance to see it in PDX first!
Stand Up Comedy is a perfect venue for this type of event because the shop itself is like an exclusive gallery. Here you’ll find brands, prints and objet d’art you can’t find anywhere else in Portland. Highly edited and curated with an artist’s appreciation to detail and exclusivity, Stand Up Comedy offers avant-garde fashion with a sense of humor. Right now they have hugely inspiring, structural pieces by Cosmic Wonder Light Source (perfect to wear to a type of show like Cool Art), lightly draped dresses by Electric Feathers (above) and beyond-cool printed frocks by Denmark-based artist Henrik Vibskov. You might go for the art, but trust us, you’ll stay for the fashion.
