Montavilla is fast becoming Portland’s newest shopping and dining hotspot, which is just dandy with us, ‘cause really there can never be too many. Check out this bustling up-and-coming neighborhood during its First Friday celebration from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. this Friday, June 4, when local boutiques and restaurants stay open late to offer shopping steals and dining deals. Here’s a quick rundown of the haps:
The always check-out-worthy local designer boutique Union Rose (7909 S.E. Stark St.; 503-287-4242) will host a tee party (get it?) from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Save 10 percent on T-shirts from cool local labels She-She Pdx (whose Oregon Rose tank was recently featured in our Portland fashion trend story about roses, Hopeful Monsters, The People’s Republic of Portland, Eclectikid and more.
Portland Garment factory (7910 S.E. Stark St.; 503-752-4030) will host a summery art party featuring a live performance art show by Branic Howard and works on paper by artist Wynde Dyer, 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Also enjoy wine, treats and browse tons of new clothing styles.
If non-lame acoustic folk rock is your thing, swing by Bipartisan Cafe (7901 S.E. Stark St.; 503-253-1051) to listen to live music from Shicky Gnarowitz. Vintage Cocktail Lounge (7907 S.E. Stark St.; 503-262-0696) will also offer live music, as well as First Friday cocktail specials.
Trinette’s Floral (8037 S.E. Stark St.; 503-252-6650) a family-owned biz by a talented mother-daughter floral design team (neat!) will display oh-so-pretty floral art exhibits. Stop by and smell the roses, and while you’re there be treated to the equally-pretty vocals of singer Jan Hutchinson.
The perfect compliment to sweet, homemade pie is fresh cider. Discover your favorite type at Immortal Pie and Larder (8029 S.E. Stark St.; 971-255-1491) with its FREE First Friday cider tasting. If the hard stuff is more up your alley, Country Cat Café (7937 S.E. Stark St.; 503-408-1414) will be sampling rare bourbon and rye flights for your palette’s enjoyment.
Last but not least (but possibly the most random), Montavilla Community Acupuncture will have metal art from blacksmith Arnon Kartmazov on display, as well as custom-made fortune cookies. Say it with us now… neat!

Thanks for the coverage of First Friday in Montavilla. It’s true – metal art and acupuncture does seem like a random enterprise, but Arnon Kartmazov is married to one of the clinic’s owners (me), and he also is responsible for the wonderful door pull both at Country Cat (pictured above) and at Bipartisan Cafe (as K and K Forgeworks). So, like random acts of kindness, it all makes sense in the final analysis!
