Hawthorne Street Fair sidewalk sales + specials

On any given day Hawthorne Boulevard is packed with shop-hungry pedestrians, but come this Sunday it will be pure Portland pandemonium. Grab your sunscreen, comfy walking shoes and a wad of cash because it’s time for the annual summer Hawthorne Street Fair, taking place from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, August 15.
Each year thousands of Portlanders flock to the fair to enjoy Hawthorne’s bevy of cute local shops, restaurants and street vendors, most offering fun activities, special sales and performances for the enjoyment of the masses. But we here at The Neat Sheet are most interested in the enjoyment of the shoppers, and enjoy they will because tons of neat local shops will hold sidewalk sales during the fair.
Local 35 got a jump on the festivities by putting their summer sale racks out on the sidewalk all week (P.S., all sale merchandise has been marked down by as much as 50 percent!). Mink boutique will host a trunk show of jewelry by Amy Burgess, along with a big ol’ sidewalk sale featuring $10 hats and sunglasses, plus an additional 15 percent savings on sale items. And the impossible-to-go-in-without-buying-something gift shrine known as Presents of Mind (right) will offer special discounts all day, a sidewalk sale and special guest Flipside Hats.
In addition to great shopping deals, prepare yourself for some seriously strange, Portland-brand entertainment for all ages. Live music will play all day; there’s a designated area with face painting, puppet shows and sing-a-longs for kids; you can catch a free showing of badass film classic “Labyrinth” starring an 80’stastic David Bowie at Baghdad theater (we’re SO there by the way); and Joe Bike will offer free bike repairs in the Key Bank parking lot and Ben and Jerry’s will be giving away free samples all day too.
We can’t list everything that’s happening so go check it out for yourselves and enjoy a merry day of shopping, sun (oh yeah, the forecast is a hot one) and Portland community fun.
