Local art + craft shows put the “art” back in heart

Two sweet local art and craft events this weekend will take a loving look at Valentine’s Day, celebrating the art of the heart from Friday, Feb. 5 through Sunday, Feb. 7.
First, Bite Studio in Southeast Portland will host a Friday evening opening for its “Love in Print” art exhibit, featuring pieces from 36 printmakers who will show off works inspired by love. Artists Shawn Demarest and Chris Haberman collaborated on a work for the show, creating “Lover” (left), which is a copper plate etching drawn by Haberman and fleshed-out by Demarest with various intaglio techniques.
We adore the idea of giving local art as a meaningful and personal Valentine’s Day gift – or any gift for that matter – and Demarest agrees. ”I like a Valentine’s Day gift to be loving on as many levels as possible,” Demarest said. “Loving because I’m thinking of what will appeal to my sweetheart, loving because I’m supporting Portland by purchasing something made in Portland, and loving because I’m supporting the creative dream of a local artist. One, big, heart-shaped ring of love.”
In addition to all that love, 40 percent of the proceeds from the print sales will benefit p:ear, a nonprofit organization that mentors homeless youth.
Next up, head to “Say it with heART” in Northeast Portland’s Hollywood district for a show and sale of heart-themed arts and crafts by local artists (heartists?), which also make for perfect V-day gift grabbing. Shop for handmade jewelry, Valentine’s Day cards, journals, gourmet gifts, soaps, ceramics and more.
Browse the Say it with heART blog for a preview of items you’ll find at the sale, including beautiful handmade ceramic hearts by Michelle Gallagher (right); jewelry by Liz Hatcher; and paper art cards by Tai Danforth. There also will be a drawing to win two FREE gift baskets, and they’ll accept donations for Oregon Food Bank throughout the weekend. Sweet!
