Emerging Portland fashion designer Janeane Marie (who you can watch compete on the upcoming Project Runway Season 7) will put on a must-see trunk show and sale this week at the Flurry pop-up shop, in conjunction with two other outstanding locals – Sahlia Michelle Designs jewelry and Varnish Clothing. Sahlia Michelle and Varnish will show first, from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 18; then Sahlia Michelle will be back for a second show with Janeane Marie, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 19.
All three designers are deserving of our love. We liken Sahlia Michelle’s hand-pounded silver jewelry, with its gunmetal chains and raw semiprecious stones, to our favorite classic rock; and as sticklers for craftsmanship, we’re big fans of Kelcey Blanton’s relatively new and expertly turned-out Varnish line.
But for just one moment, let’s focus completely on loving Janeane Marie Ceccanti. We’re especially excited about this Saturday show because we’ll be able to preview her exciting Totem Coast spring collection, and we can finally get our eager hands on pieces from her 2024 fall/holiday collection, including the fabulously futuristic Moon Dress (right), which we haven’t been able to buy until now.
“My holiday collection is named 2024 because that is the year Nasa predicts we will have established colonies on the moon,” Ceccanti said. “I guess I was just thinking about how tragic it would be to forced to live on the moon because the earth is no longer inhabitable, and how you would have to be reminded constantly of home, with earth always on the horizon.”
That said, we doubt living on the moon be so tragic if our outfits were this hot. The 2024 collection also features sexy, Star Trek worthy metallic rayon skirts and block modal tops with pieced shoulders (top); fitted, color-blocked tees in stark black and white; and loose, racer-back tanks with cadet-inspired rope details.
Coming back down to earth, you also can preview Janeane Marie’s Totem Coast spring collection, which was inspired by the Pacific Northwest shoreline. “I love the ocean and coastal forests, and I was also inspired by the artwork of the Indian tribes local to the Northwest. It’s a very simple collection, stylistically, but made out of beautiful fabrics.” Case in point, Italian rayon tees with black leather strap details; and tops and skirts in silk or lambskin with asymmetrical or angled pleats.
p.s. This just in – Janeane Marie will mark down pieces from past collections by 50 to 70 percent during the show!
