One of Portland’s many claims to fame is our ability to party hearty, regardless of occasion or circumstance. What constitutes a reason to party? Well, in this case, the reason is that uber-cool jewelry line Sword + Fern has been holding steady at their 811 E. Burnside location for two fun-filled years (in spite of the latest knarly construction on Lower East Burnside – c’mon, let’s show some support) and they want to celebrate. And celebrate they shall, with a backyard celebration you’ll be dying to crash from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. on Friday, August 27. Luckily, you won’t have to, because all are welcome at the Sword + Fern “Backyard Mythology” anniversary party.
Sword + Fern is the creative offspring of artist/designer/plant enthusiast Emily Baker and we’ve been oogling her stuff for years (her installation at newly-extinct Content ‘09 was one of our faves). Baker’s eco-friendly, stylistic creations are earthy and beautiful and are often made from found objects and natural elements. Her collections feature driftwood, crystals, raw gems, leather, and seashells. The Ancient Future necklace (right) is made with sea urchin bones, recycled car parts and vintage brass cubes.
The anniversary party will have live music by Lovers, a new showing of photography by Megan Holmes, live skateboarding demos and lessons by Skate like a Girl, a keg of Lompoc Fool’s Gold Ale, treats from Dovetail Bakery, and an electro/ new wave dance party with DJ Party Martyr. Best of all there will be big markdowns on Sword + Fern merch, which is reason enough to stop by (if there wasn’t enough all ready).
