Plans tonight? How about an evening of dining and shopping in an exciting, up-and-coming corner of North Portland? Shops in the big ol’ building at the corner of North Williams Avenue and Failing Street will stay open late (from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, Dec. 18), for in-store parties and holiday sales. Plus, you can fuel up before or after at your choice of cool restaurants on the block.
“Lifestyle store” Ink + Peat, a pretty and inventive space that combines artful home decor with fresh floral designs, will treat shoppers to cocktails and snacks, and mark down any item in store by 20 percent. Save on striped scarves by Ministry of Yarn; Frasier Fir candles by The Thymes (right), which smell like a pine forest (in a good way); pillows by Portland’s Anna Joyce, appliqued with playful owls, birds and deer; throw blankets made from vintage saris and much more to give or keep.
At SpielWerk Toys, save 20 percent storewide on hard-to-find classic toys and modern originals, many of which are handcrafted and all of which are beautiful, simply designed and likely to be passed down through generations. Our neat gift picks are CitiBlocks for building, or this elegant four-story birch dollhouse, perfect for pre-schoolers.
And over at Tinymeat, founder Michael Wood has transformed his shop headquarters into a curated collection of local handmade goods he’s calling “TinyHidyHo.” There is great gifting to be had here, like the pretty Thrush Thrush checkbook cover (above), which is only $12; plus wallets, journals, passport covers and more.
“I have over 20 local artist’s and crafter’s wares, as well as the world’s largest selection of Tinymeat wallets and accessories,” Wood said. “Our building is the emerging neighborhood that has all your favorite eats and shops, if only you knew it was here.” Well, guess what? Now we do!
Oh, and speaking of eats – the block is home to Eat oyster bar (New Orleans style Cajun cookin’, yum); Lincoln restaurant (upscale comfort food in a chic, modern space); Cha! Cha! Cha! (a more casual Mexican taqueria); Ristretto Roasters coffee shop (locally roasted beans!); and Pix Patisserie across the street, for pre- or post-shopping sweets.
