In Portland, tattoos are just another stylish accessory – like a handbag or a pretty pair of earrings. So then, why not shop for both at once? This simply brilliant idea has finally come together thanks to Icon Tattoo’s new owner, the ultra-talented artist and lover of all-things-pretty, Melanie Nead.

Upon taking ownership of Icon Tattoo Studio and relocating to Russell Street last month (across from Mint and The White Eagle), crafty Nead has spiffed up the gorgeous new space with a retail section offering locally made jewelry, cards and Icon Tattoo gear. Cool finds include Lydia Yost’s chicken or turkey feather earrings, decorated with pretty agates, glass beads and bones; and an exclusive line of Icon jewelry from Brehan Todd Designs.

“I want to connect tattooing with other fine crafts, especially decorative ones like jewelry,” Nead said. “I see tattoos like beautiful jewelry, as they should accentuate and compliment the body parts they’re on. I want the shop to be welcoming and accessible to people even if they’re not getting tattooed, and I want to showcase non-tattoo artisans.”

Stop by Icon’s Grand Opening party this Friday, Sept. 25 to see the new space for yourself, meet the artists (almost all women) and save 10 percent on retail purchases made during the event. You’ll also enjoy naturally sinful snacks from Abby’s Table, gypsy metal music by GingGang, and a raffle to win superfun stuff, including… what else? Tattoos!

Grand Opening: 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, Sept. 25
Icon Tattoo Studio, 813 N. Russell St.; 503-957-4738
