Neat street: Rockin’ the drop-crotch in downtown Portland

Let’s talk about Day Tresvant’s pants.
We found this fashion risk taker in downtown Portland Saturday afternoon, rockin’ baggy, drop-crotch jeans from Only Denim (a Danish brand known for blurring the line between masculine and feminine), which she picked up on a trip to China. Faded jeans with a saggy crotch and asymmetrical zippers is a style we haven’t seen too much on Portland streets, so we stopped Day to ask about her fashion-forward look.
Tresvant, who lives in West Linn and teaches Zumba latin-inspired dance classes at 24 Hour Fitness, said she moved to Portland from New York City three years ago and she still misses the variety and the world class shopping. NYC is where she bought her big black designer handbag (an expensive patent leather croc embossed Yves Saint Lauren tote), which she turned right around and paired with a Forever 21 bomber jacket and an $8 hat she bought from a street vendor in Miami.
This kind of mixing is more important than matching, explained Tresvant. “I’m not all about matchy matchy,” she said. “I am a risk taker. If it’s different, I like it.”
Locally, Tresvant loves shopping at Meringue Boutique in Lake Oswego and Olivia Belle, which she was sad to learn has closed. And she was wearing another local favorite on her feet – Nike ID sneakers with bright turquoise laces.
Tresvant says she often dresses urban casual, like on this busy downtown day amid the Saturday Market and St. Patrick’s Day party crowds, but when she does dress up she really goes for it – high style that’s also funky and edgy. Her overall fashion philosophy? “If it looks good, rock it.”

That’s funny, I didn’t even notice the itty bitty arm! I assure you this photo wasn’t altered in any way – it must be the wind blowing the shirt sleeve in an odd direction. For the record, this has been the most controversial outfit Neat Street has covered to date. Lots of comments on Facebook. People either hate it or love it – not a lot of middle ground. Thanks to Day for letting us interrupt her and pose!
