Let us give it to you straight: Prom is expensive. And for every young woman who spends her entire high school career looking forward to prom as the sweetest night of her life, there’s another whose excitment is tempered by sticker stress. But the good news is there’s help to be had – and a beauty bonus for your kindness.

abbys-closet-free-prom-dresses-portland-giveawayAbby’s Closet is a local non-profit organization working to help provide prom dresses for high school gals who can’t afford to buy a fancy dress. All year long, they work hard collecting dress donations from women willing to part with their gently worn prom dresses, bridesmaid dresses, formal and semi-formal gowns. High school girls are then invited to an annual gown giveaway event in April, where they can choose from thousands of free gowns to wear to prom – where they’ll feel every bit as much a princess as their friends.

This year’s Gown Givaway Event will be held Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11 at the Lloyd Center DoubleTree Hotel, but there are a few neat ways to help before then. You can donate your dress at one of many local drop-off sites. Or, bring your dresses for donation to Blush Beauty Bar in Northwest Portland and trade them for a beauty makeover.

Blush will collect dresses for Abby’s Closet throughout February, and in return they’ll give you a $30 gift certificate for a Shirley Temple makeup application. You can redeem the certificate for yourself, of course. Or perhaps you might want to gift some lucky promgoer in need of a beauty boost?
