Neat street style: Gettin’ the Led out on N.E. 28th Ave.

When we spotted Erin Lyon’s electric orange sweater jacket from two blocks away on Thursday afternoon, we gave chase down Northeast 28th Avenue to get a closer look (rest assured we at The Neat Sheet hop high hurdles to bring you style stories from the streets of PDX).

We finally caught up to Lyon, and in spite of being wheezy and breathless we were delighted to discover her smile was even brighter than her jacket. She was also kind enough to tell us about her charming vintage mix of ladylike lace and hard rock chains before continuing home to catch a nap prior to her late shift at Rontoms lounge.

“I listen to a lot of music while getting dressed, so my clothes kind of match that,” Lyon said. “Except when I’m in a hurry, and then it’s all stretch pants and Western shirts.” This day, Lyon (a drummer) had time to compile an edgy vintage thrift ensemble that would make any lady rocker proud. She found her bright sweater coat and brown oxford shoes in a .39 cent sale at Better Bargains thrift store, and she paired them with crocheted tights and her brown-and-cream lace-trimmed “Heidi dress” from Red Light Clothing Exchange.

Over this, Lyon piled on a flashy golden vintage brooch, a key chain necklace she made herself with an oversized key she bought at Hippo Hardware, and another pendant boasting the name of her friends’ local band, Pierced Arrows. Lyon herself will be joining local Portland punk rock band Gorilla Monsoon as a drummer this summer, and until then she’ll be rockin’ her wardrobe.

“I went through this phase where I wanted to look like the girlfriend of someone in Led Zeppelin – the entire band,” Lyon said. “Ok, I’m still in it.”
