Laura Bieluczyk was putting off good vibrations when we found her breezing down Mississippi Avenue on Saturday afternoon. This was due in part to a nice lunch she’d just had at Miss Delta with her mom, who was visiting from Houston, Texas, and in part due to the positive energy coming from her pretty stone jewelry.
“I like stones that mean something to me or that have good energy,” Bieluczyk said, pointing out her yellow citrine earrings and reddish-brown carnelian necklace. Her pendant was handmade by a friend in Austin, Texas, using carnelian she got from a Portland stone collector. “I’m also a big fan of turquoise these days. It’s supposed to help guard against a catastrophe. I wear it when I fly.”
There were no catastrophes in sight this day, as Bieluczyk flew down Mississippi showing her mom around her favorite part of Portland. Bieluczyk moved here from Burlington, Vt., last fall, and now works as a nanny and a personal trainer. She said many of her school friends from Burlington also moved to Portland, which she thinks is similar except there’s more to do here and the weather is a little nicer. “I love the nature and the people,” she said.
But let’s get one thing clear: In spite of all her talk of positive energy stones and nature, Bieluczyk also is a pro shopper, mixing old with new, thrift with designer, neutrals with eye-popping color, and finding neat things both online and in her favorite Mississippi Avenue shops. She bought her brown tweed military coat from Modcloth.com and her tall black wedge boots from VictoriasSecret.com. Her vintage dress, trimmed with colorful piping, is from Animal Traffic.
“I like to be individualistic,” Bieluczyk said. I’m really a fan of vintage finds and things that are one-of-a-kind. Also local places and independent artists.” She said she especially loves Mississippi Avenue shop Flutter. “They have incredible wedding dresses that make me want to get married right now.” No matter that she’s not engaged. “The dress is more important than the groom.”
