Direct from the Apollo Theater, “Dreamgirls” takes the Portland spotlight Tuesday, April 13 through Sunday, April 18, and two lucky Neat Sheet readers will win tickets to opening night of the Broadway Across America production.
Dreamgirls is right up The Neat Sheet’s alley – a fashionable story about strong women and challenging situations, in this case an up-and-coming 1960’s all-girl singing group that encounters all kinds of triumphs and tribulations on their way to fame and fortune.
The story follows hopeful talents Deena Jones, Lorrell Robinson and Effie White, who are performing on the ’60s Motown scene as The Dreamettes when they are discovered by ambitious agent Curtis Taylor, Jr. He lands the gals a job as backup singers for a rising rock ‘n soul sensation and their careers quickly rise, until the beautiful Deena emerges as the star of the group over full-voiced Effie… and drama ensues.
We’re excited to see the latest version of the show, which was first introduced to the Broadway stage in 1981, and later of course made into the movie starring Beyoncé Knowles. Portland Opera, which is presenting the show in conjuntion with Broadway Across America, tells us this is an especially exciting production for fashion lovers because “Dreamgirls” boasts more than 400 costumes, and each Dreamgirl has more than 20 costume changes. We’re excited to check it out and report back!

I worked across the street from the Winter Garden Theater in NYC for the entire run of Dreamgirls, looked at the marquee every day, but never saw it. I was too busy I guess with my job, but boy, would I ever love to see it now!

I have a good friend who would love to see this but is living on a tight budget. I’m not quite feeling flush enough to spend the big bucks but saw this chance at tickets and couldn’t resist. He’s a huge broadway fan!
