Project Runway is back people, and it’s manlier than ever. It’s been two weeks since we saw Seth Aaron Henderson walk away with a win, and homegirl Janeane Marie Ceccanti walk away with nothing. Since we knew Henderson was safe with his win-mandated immunity for this challenge, we were able to relax and just focus on the clothes this week. And by clothes, we mean sheet metal.
This week’s episode, entitled “Hard Wear,” was the season’s first non-fabric challenge. Contestants were given $100 and sent to a local hardware store with the task of creating a look and a complementary accessory out of various raw materials. Designers grabbed everything but the kitchen sink, picking items such as sandpaper (Amy Sarabi), garbage bags (Jay Nicholas Sario), washers and cord (Emilio Sosa), copper (Jesse LeNoir), and sheet metal (Henderson) to use to make their garments.
Watching the contestants work with such unusual materials definitely made for an interesting show. It was particularly amusing to watch Henderson straddle his dress form while hammering metal around it in an attempt to get a “Terminator 2” liquid-metal thing happening. That’s good TV.
On the runway the vibe was predictably futuristic. Modernized Judy Jetsons stomped down one after the other. The standout disaster of the show was Sosa’s pink cord, washer-adorned, itty-bitty bikini (right). A miscalculation of epic proportions, Emilio underestimated how many washers were needed to complete his look and ended up sending his model almost completely naked down the runway.
This biggest mistake of the evening however? The fact that Sosa wasn’t auf’d for his complete fail of an “outfit.” Instead that (dis)honor fell on LeNoir, whose copper dress reminded the judges of the Tin Man from Wizard of Oz and a dirty vacuum bag. Yeah, it wasn’t the best look of the evening, but it certainly didn’t seem like Jesse should be the one sent home.
Picking up the first double win of Season 7 was Sario, with his expertly crafted garbage bag ensemble – a deserving win for sure. Making plastic bags look like leather can’t be an easy task. Henderson was neither up nor down in this challenge. His T2-gone-girly look (shown top) was given the A-OK by judges and he’ll be back to create another look next week.
At this point in the season the designers are officially halfway to Bryant Park. Things just got real. Can’t wait for next week! In the meantime, watch Henderson’s video blog from the Hard Wear episode, in which he delights over competitor Sosa’s skimpy bathing suit of washers and pink cord:
