Local screenprinting shop/record label/handmade consignment shop Tender Loving Empire is relocating to the heart of the city, setting up in more spacious digs right next door to killer boutique Radish Underground. To celebrate, the two shops are teaming up to hold a playful PDX Pride Photo Contest now through the new store opening date of Thursday, May 6.
The two shops invite you to send in your most creative photos of y’all throwing the PDX hand sign, popularized by Tender Loving Empire’s T-shirt design (right). The most fun, creative and positively “Portland” pic wins a PDX package they’ve put together of local goods they say are worth more than a sunny day in the midst of Stumptown winter. The winner will be announced during the Tender Loving Empire grand opening party on Thursday, May 6.
“We are beyond thrilled to have TLE joining us in the West End,” said Gina Morris, who co-owns Radish Underground with Celestial Sipes. “This happens to be one of my favorite original designs from their screen printing shop.”
Morris, who lives in Tender Loving Empire’s current Northwest neighborhood, said she and her husband spent a long time in front of the shop’s window one evening trying to work out the hand sign. “It was pretty hilarious. In that moment it occurred to me that I’ve never lived somewhere, especially a big city, where all the people, even the transplants, have so much pride in being a Portlander. When we got the official word from Brianne and Jared (Mees) for the big move of the beloved shop, I thought this would be a great way to welcome them as our new neighbors – and collect some love for PDX to boot!”
If you need inspiration, visit the Radish Underground Newsletter blog, which features pics of choice locals throwing the sign, including Betsy & Iya jewelry designer Betsy Cross (right) and hilarious Snarky Card creator Super Alisa, a.k.a. Alisa Starr.
You should also scoot down to Radish Underground in person, because Morris said the great spring 2010 arrivals have begun to pour in. Shop now for organic cotton tunics and sweet leggings from Raw Earth Wild Sky, one-off pieces by DUST, new jewelry from Elyse Bunkers, Bella & Loki and Betsy & Iya, with even more stuff to come in the next couple of weeks.
