By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor There are so many things to love love love about summers in Portland. On the top of our must-do-every-weekend list? Neighborhood fairs! Community, friends, fashion, artists and music… what more could a local fashion news site ask for? Coming up Saturday, August 7 is the annual Fremont Fest, and already we are applying sunscreen in preparation for some fashion-y fun in the sun. An annual celebration of community and a staple of the Beaumont-Wilshire neighborhood, the Fremont Fest will feature a day of activities that promotes and celebrates the eclecticism of all who choose to live + ...
Neat PEOPLE: Project Runway 8 designer Gretchen Jones
By Karen Vitt, NEAT editor in chief Here we go... again! Project Runway 8 premieres on Lifetime TV this Thursday, July 29 at 9 p.m., with yet another talented Portland area designer set to compete in a scissors showdown against 16 other fashionable folks from around the country. Last season, Vancouver, Wash.'s Seth Aaron Henderson brought home the Project Runway 7 win, and local designer Janeane Marie Ceccanti made Portland proud in the first few episodes, too. Now all eyes are on MothLove designer Gretchen Jones, to see if she has was it takes to dazzle on fashion's most exciting show ...
Project Runway 8, Episode 1 Recap: “Sew It Begins”
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor It seems like it’s only been mere months since Portland-area local Seth Aaron Henderson became the latest designer to win the sew-or-be-cut challenge that is Project Runway. Oh wait it has only been a few months. Never mind, PR is back and it’s bigger and longer than ever before (it remains to be seen whether it will be better). There are changes afoot for the Project Runway Season 8, most notably a 30-minute increase in running time. The Portlander du jour to watch this time around is one Gretchen Jones, the eco-minded designer behind local line MothLove ...
Neat TREND! The latest stylish summer sunglasses in PDX
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor It may seem counter-intuitive to do a trend piece on sunglasses in the middle of summer after most people have probably shopped them back in May. However, if you’re anything like us, you have probably lost and/or broken that sweet pair of Ray Ban aviators you thought were so cool all those months ago. Well, now is your (second) chance to get ahead on the trendiest of trends in the sun-covering eyewear racket. We can see the future… and it’s looking like we could use a new pair of shades. Sunglasses have always had the power to ...
First Friday with Seth Aaron at Anne Bocci Boutique
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor We’ve got exciting news for all you Project Runway-philes out there. As most of you know, last season Vancouver, Wash.-based designer Seth Aaron Henderson took home the big prize thanks to his daring high-fashion, hard-rock aesthetic and expert trademark tailoring (and we're already gearing up for PR8 with another local designer, Gretchen Jones of MothLove). Now, several months since the finale aired, Henderson is back with a brand new collection. To get an exclusive first peek at Henderson’s latest designs, stop by Anne Bocci Boutique from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, August 6. Anne ...
New Marni + Current/Elliot designer denim at Nordstrom
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor European designer line Marni has teamed up with newly minted L.A. scenster denim brand Current/Elliot for a co-branded autumn/winter jeans collection. The resulting products have just recently made it all the way to the breezy Northwest, by way of Nordstrom, and we are (maybe not surprisingly) really excited about it. Apparently when you combine the quirky high style of Milan with laid-back California you get a collection that seems tailor-made in the vein of Portland's style aesthetic. Weird, huh? The Current/Elliot and Marni line of denim feels distinctly new grunge and features many different looser styles, such ...
Bargain Hunting 101 is back! Huge deals + local vendors
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor Locally-minded bargain shoppers rejoice! The last Bargain Hunting 101 event took place on Super Bowl Sunday and was such a smashing success they are giving us more of what we crave. Yes, we went to the last one (with our mommies), yes ...

By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor Now that we’re done celebrating our nation’s independence by blowing up a chunk of it (we hope we never have to give up our classic “Simpson’s” quotes, but we know the cultural relevance is uh, waning), it is time for La Fête Nationale, France’s national holiday to commemorate the storming of Bastille.... By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor Swimsuit shopping is the bane of existence for most people out there (not just the ladies mind you, we know many a guy whose pasty, un-toned skin shudders at the thought). By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor Spring 2010 runway collections by fashion powerhouses Chanel and Dolce & Gabbana took the humble art of crochet and elevated it to new levels of chic, as both designers simultaneously spun out high-fashion, craft-based looks. In Portland (a.k.a. craft capitol U.S.A.), this was hardly anything new. We’ve always... [Read more of this article]
