The Neat Team tackles the top trends for Fall 2010
By Marianne Schnell and the The Neat Sheet Team The onset of cold weather and depressing downpours may be saddening to some, but embracing Fall Fashion 2010 can soften the chilly blow. And let’s face it, Portland: We’re more at home in a hoodie and waders than a bikini anyway, so let’s fall forward gracefully and embrace some upcoming seasonal style. On a global level, current fashion is all about the updated classics: camel overcoats, white button-ups, polished trousers, opulent sweaters, leather jackets and sturdy boots. This new style of bold minimalism features strong silhouettes, clean lines and durable materials. So what's the modern twist ...
Neat TREND! How wood you like some cute clog boots?
By Marianne Schnell, NEAT contributor Chances are if you’re a Portland gal you own more than your fair share of cold weather boots. But living in the Northwest, where cool temps and rain rule, there's always a good reason for yet another booty call. Meet your new BFF: The clog boot. It’s a hybrid of sorts that merges a sturdy wooden sole with a leather/suede upper boot, resulting in a stylish mix of comfort and practicality Portland women crave. “Clog booties bring modern and Old World womanly style together,” said Jennifer Thomas, owner of the multifaceted Jet boutique on Mississippi Avenue (where ...
Shop Fashion’s Night Out in downtown Portland
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor Just as fashion magazines double in size this time of year, fall fashion events tend to be pretty heavy as well. In early October, we’ve got our very own Portland Fashion Week to look forward to (and believe us, we are), but before that there’s Vogue editor Anna Wintour's ode to apparel, Fashion’s Night Out, in and around downtown Portland from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 10. After its smashing debut success in New York last year, Fashion's Night Out has expanded to include dozens of cities around the world, each participating simultaneously in the ...
Get wild at the Sweet F.A. Rock & Roll Fashion Show
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor After its hit show last February, Doomtown Productions has decided to release an encore performance of its successful annual Sweet F.A Rock & Roll Fashion Show. The sex-drugs-rock-n-roll fantasy fueled runway show is happening once again, this time in downtown Portland from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. this Saturday, September 4. Sweet F.A. tends to be quite a raucous, party-heavy experience, and it is a perfect representative of Portland’s well documented wild-side fashion aesthetic. Boring and quiet this show is not. Instead of walking down the runway dead-eyed and straight faced, models at F.A. (both male and female) ...
Portland’s in-jean-ious denim shop Blake relocates
By Monique Balas, NEAT contributor Blake Nieman-Davis, our favorite denim dude, has new digs. Nieman-Davis relocated his eponymous store, Blake , from its old location at 2285 N.W. Johnson St. to a snazzy new spot now open at 26 N.W. 23rd Place (alongside Twist in the old Smith & Hawken building). Blake has dominated the local denim scene for the last seven years, but “the lease was up and to be honest, we’ve just outgrown that space,” Nieman-Davis said of the previous shop. At 3,700 square feet, the store’s new location is more than triple the size of the last space’s 1,050 ...
Neat TREND! Bottoms up to soft, baggy pants
By Marianne Schnell, NEAT contributor Do you ever look forward to pulling out your “fat pants?” Didn’t think so. Thankfully the time has come to ditch these depressing duds in favor of the recent reinvention of loose fitting pants. Let us not revert to the days of the running man, because, yes, we are indeed too legit to quit hammer pants. Time to let go of the stigma and embrace the comfort of the harem, carrot, stretch, eased or slouchy style pants. Our new go-to bottoms are offered in a variety of interesting silhouettes and roomy alternatives to your stale staples. “I ...
Bridesmaid dresses get new life in Project Runway 8, Ep. 6
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor After last week’s group challenge fueled trauma and drama, this week’s episode flew by with the greatest of ease. The cringe-worthy moments were down a good 90 percent, and all seemed swell in the land of Project Runway 8 (except for the growing league of haters toward sweet Micheal Costello, that is. Other designers think he’s talentless and undeserving. We think he’s undeserving of all the hate!) PR8 Episode 6, “You Can Totally Wear That Again,” was one of the unconventional challenges. No, they didn’t have to make a designer look out of silly putty and string, but ...

By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor The world of Project Runway 8 was turned upside down last night, and in an epic battle of egos vs. underdogs, the meek did inherit the earth. This week’s episode, “There Is An ‘I’ in Team,” broke down this season’s challenge winners (sorry, Portlander Gretchen Jones) and rose up the two contestants... [Read more of this article]

By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor This week’s Project Runway 8, Episode 4 recap might be a bit shorter than most, and here’s why: In our humble opinion, it was one of the most unwatchable episodes in recent memory and a travesty given the potential for awesomeness of the “Hats Off To You” challenge. It might also have been the fact that... [Read more of this article]
By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor PedX Shoes is preggers y’all, and they’re due to have a fully grown hybrid shoe baby named Manifesto (if anyone is interested in writing a true life PDX fashion comic book, this could be your starting point). By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor Project Runway 8, Episode 3 was a party, indeed. That is, if ambulance trips, catty comments and “a transvestite flamenco dancer at a funeral” is your kind of scene. There were copious amounts of party supplies involved. The challenge du jour was to create a look from $100 of supplies purchased at party store, and... [Read more of this article]

By Erin Flesch, NEAT contributor Now that we are firmly entrenched in Project Runwaydom (as last week’s show was still technically “auditions”) we must admit, it feels good to be back, especially if you’re a Portland fashion fan.
